Season Six of "Downton Abbey" premiered on Jan. 3 with viewers eager to see how loose ends will be tied up in the final season. The show is PBS’s most-viewed television program, airing in both the United Kingdom and the United States. While there are many reasons that the show has been so successful, there is no question that Dame Maggie Smith’s character Lady Violet adds life to the show with her one-liners and strong opinions. As a tribute to both Maggie Smith as well as the character she plays on "Downton," here are some of Lady Violet’s best quotes, delivered with the perfect amount of sass.
“If I were to search for logic, I would not look for it among the English upper class.”
“Principles are like prayers; noble of course, but awkward at a party.”
“I’m a woman, Mary. I can be as contrary as I choose.”
"She's not being rude, just wrong."
“Don’t be defeatist, dear. It’s very middle class.”
“All this endless thinking. It’s very overrated.”
“At my age, one must ration one’s excitement.”
“I am never wrong.”
“You are a woman with a brain and reasonable ability. Stop whining and find something to do.”
“Vulgarity is no substitute for wit.”
Maggie Smith has won two Emmys for her role in "Downton," as well as one Globe trophy and five BAFTA prizes. Her fans will enjoy seeing her play Lady Violet for the last time, and though her character will be sorely missed, Lady Violet's wit will be remembered.
