If you live or have ever lived on Long Island, you’ve probably hear of the famous Port Jefferson Harbor or commonly known as “Down Port”. It’s a place for everyone to go to at any time of the day. I’ve been going down there since I was young and continue to go all the time, especially during the summer. I thought of several reasons why Down Port is such a great place to go, even though I’m pretty sure I love it more than anything. Just kidding!
1. It’s close by.
If you live nearby (or even far away if you choose), it’s a great place for spontaneous plans with friends or for a date.
2. If you're smart, you never have to pay to park.
I go down there so often that I learned ways to never have to pay to park. Certain times of the night when they’re closing up the Town of Brookhaven lot, they don’t charge you.
3. From the second you get out of your car you can sense the livelihood.
Something is always going on Down Port. It’s impossible to not want to take part.
4. Odds are you will see someone you know.
It’s a nice spot to catch up or even have some small talk with friends.
5. But you may also see someone you don’t want to.
You see someone that you don’t want to communicate with. It’s easy to quickly get away by turning a corner or turning around without it looking obvious...(for the most part).
6. There’s an ice cream place at almost every corner.
My personal favorite is a small ice cream stand right in Chander’s Square off of Main Street.
They give you so much for such a small price.7. Along with ice cream, there are so many different restaurants that you can eat at.
My personal favorite is a small Greek restaurant called Z-Pita on Main Street.
8. All of the streets are connected so you’ll never get lost.
You can walk so many different paths throughout your stay and end up on Main Street.
9. Or if you don’t like to walk you can take a seat almost anywhere.
You can sit by the water or along Main Street and watch the cars drive by.
10. The sunset is beautiful to watch over the water.
If you take a picture of it at the right time, the boats in the water appear to in the shadows.
11. You can walk along the docks.
Where you will see the million dollar yachts that are nicer than some houses.
12. Once the sun is set, that doesn’t mean the beautiful scenery is over.
The lights of Downtown Port Jefferson seem to light up the sky.
