The Importance Of Down Ballot Races

There’s plenty of corruption in your local officials.

This election cycle is one which seems to be more divided and negative than ever before. In fact, the unfavorableness of the candidates is historic. It’s pretty exciting, enthralling, soap-opera-esque stuff – and watching political coverage has never been more fun.

Everyone knows the names of the candidates running for Commander in Chief of the United States. Fewer probably know the names of their elected officials in Congress.

What about State Senate? County Commissioner?

I know what you’re thinking, where’s the fun in that? Where’s the scandal?

Don’t you worry your pretty little head, you “I find out most of my news through Snapchat because my attention span is smaller than that of a goldfish” millennial, you. There’s plenty of corruption in your local officials.

And think of all of the original, shareable, hip, new memes and holier-than-thou statuses, tweets, Instas, vines, tumbles, pins and Reddit posts you’ll be able to make from the comfort of your Uber that mommy and daddy’s credit card is paying for. And this time, it’ll be original! So original, that no one will even know what you’re talking about. And that’s what you, the trendiest of trendy, hippest of hip, want – right?

In fact, some of the greatest political scandals ever have come about from non-presidential candidates. For instance, 110 county commissioners in Oklahoma were charged with federal crimes for accepting kickbacks for purchases made under their watch. Makes Trump University seem like Drumpf University, right?

Anybody remember Anthony Weiner?

Previous Charlotte, NC City Councilmen, Warren Turner flashed a gun at laborers while telling them to stop working on a building. While he was being investigated for sexual harassment.

Three Southern Californian government officials were charged with corruption, and then tried to get the city they bankrupted to pay for their attorneys.

William Jefferson, a congressman from New Orleans was convicted of bribery, how did they find the hard evidence? The $90,000 in cash in his freezer.

Marion Barry, the previous mayor of Washington, DC, was caught smoking crack in a sting operation.

See what I’m talking about?

Aren’t local politics starting to look just a wee bit more entertaining? They become a lot more fun when you can see the direct fiscal consequences that come about in your community when your local representative is hiring prostitutes, doing drugs, accepting bribes, or sending dick pics via twitter.

So get involved! Pay attention! When you start actually getting to know your local politicians, you’ll realize how dumb a lot of them are. You’ll see the nonsensicalness of many of their statements, and who knows, maybe you’ll realize that you could do a better job and run for office! Just make sure you won't be an idiot while you’re in the political spotlight, though.

Local government officials don’t undergo intensive background checks. They don’t have to pass polygraph tests. They are vetted by you and me, the people. Opposing presidential campaigns have the monetary means to do that, city councilmen don’t.

Pay attention, and soon you might recognize that guy on Tinder is actually your congressman.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
