When I began learning about Bernie Sanders, I knew I wanted him to be president. He seemed like everything I wanted in a president: passionate, caring, fair and honest. I knew that if he got the nomination, I'd vote for him in a heartbeat.
With the primary contest coming to a close, it seems like the two candidates will be Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Of course, there is still a chance that Bernie could get the nomination, but it's just as likely that Clinton will be a candidate in the general election.
Many of Bernie's supporters feel like the political system doesn't work, and that the establishment wants Hillary to win. They are strong supporters of the hashtag #BernieOrBust.
These supporters are planning on writing Bernie in if he isn't the nominee.
While I love Bernie, I think that's not a good idea. We've seen a bit of this before. In 2000, the younger voters didn't really like Al Gore. He was just kind of--boring and uncharismatic. The voters came out in full force for Green Party candidate Ralph Nader. Because of the division in the Democratic Party, it was easy for George W. Bush to win the presidency.
It completely sucks, but a multiparty system isn't really feasible. Whichever end of the political spectrum has the least division ends up winning most of the time.
I'm all for Bernie, and if he gets the nomination, I'll totally vote for him. But if it's Hillary, anything that isn't a vote for her is a vote for Trump.
