I may be a productive and motivated individual, but that doesn't mean that I consistently strive to do more and to do better.
To be honest, I enjoy watching movies, going to the beach, partying at concerts, watching Netflix, sleeping in, going shopping, browsing Facebook and staying up late doing stupid things.
Sooner or later we stop striving for excellence and start settling for mediocrity. We decide that our dreams are too big and so rather than shoot for the moon, we become content with landing among the stars.
Mediocrity doesn't just take you over one day, it takes years and years for it to sneak up on you. Do you think people actually grow up dreaming of being "ordinary"or "mediocre"? Heck no!
But, doesn't everyone enjoy these things? Aren't a lot of the things I enjoy and spend my time doing direct contributors to my generation's stereotypes?
We all know that Michael Jordan was one of the best basketball players the world has ever seen, but in every interview that Jordan's coaches had with the press, it wasn't his amazing talent they discussed. His long time coach Phil Jackson talked time and time again about how it was Michael's hard work that made him a legend, not his talent. His talent helped, but it was the hours and hours and hours he spent outside of practice that made him great.
Our goal should not be to become revered, popular, or prideful, but our goal should be to try and drive forward a culture of high quality. A culture where our generation strives for absolute excellence and refuses to settle for anything less than great.
In this life, we will generally get what we accept - so if we genuinely want to be great and refuse mediocrity (whether it be a situation we're in at work/school, a relationship, our eating habits, etc.) that means we have to stop accepting the way it is now.
Our culture wants us to be mediocre. They want us to continue spending hours and hours watching TV and they want to convince us that we need to do x, y, and z to "fit in". Why? Because when we take what they have to say as truth, they make a profit! They win! Our society doesn't want more trendsetters, activists, and go-getters. They want more people who buy into their agenda and just "go with the flow". They want more mediocre people.
Society might say they want you to be a world changer, but society really just wants you to "fall in line."
From the moment you were born you were set on a path — a path the most of us were placed on by our parents. Each of us has been socialized in a particular fashion
