You Don't Really Want Equality Even If You Say You Do

Equality does not mean what you think it does.

You Don't Really Want Equality Even If You Say You Do

This week I saw a picture floating around the internet of a Muslim woman in a hijab at a bank. The caption on the picture questioned if it equal for her to be able to wear her hijab and only be able to see her eyes when everyone else has to remove all hats, sunglasses or whatever else they wear on their heads. The truth is, no matter how offensive the caption might be to people, it is not equal. Not equal at all.

Almost every time I get on Facebook or watch the news, I hear someone crying about how they are not treated equally, but they do not want actual equality. Equality means no Black Entertainment Television (BET), no black history month, no historically black colleges or anything else that divides the black race from every other. It means no more special treatment because of a religion, like wearing a headdress in a bank. And, yes, I realize that "every other month, TV channel, college, etc. is for white people."

The truth is, people do not want the equality they cry, scream and throw unruly fits over. They want special treatment. They want things that will help them out, or even give them the freedoms that they are entitled too. There are things that other people's religions require of them, and I do not want to mess with that because I also do not want anyone to mess with my freedoms. I want to have the freedom to express my religion how I so choose, whether that be prayer in school or be able to not serve someone or however I choose as long as it isn't harming anyone.

This ordeal over equality has gotten way out of hand. Businesses have to treat their employees or future employees with so much "equality," that it practically hurts employees. Companies are required to hire a ratio from applications and races that they have to choose one race over another, even if the person who happens to be a certain race might be better at a job. That is insane. What happened to the freedoms that this country was founded on? I understand that it helps to make things equal especially if someone had a certain prejudice, but what happens when equality starts to hurt?

People do not want equality at all. They want to still have things that separate and identify them as a group or community. So let's stop with all this nonsense and understand that certain things are just not fair. When it's all said and done, people do not really want equality, they just don't. Equality means giving up things that they identify themselves by, but hey that's equality for you.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
