6 Reasons You Should NEVER Underestimate A Music Major

Some look at being a music major as an easy path. Little do they know that it is one of the most rigorous majors out there

6 Reasons You Should NEVER Underestimate A Music Major

Music majors have to balance everything from academic classes to ensembles to scheduling time to eat. Music is a rigorous major that requires impeccable time-management skills and a strong will to get better every day.

1. Music Majors take 10+ classes per semester.

Being in music, many of our classes and ensembles are worth 1 or 0 credit hours, so we have to take more classes just to reach full-time status. Some people have scholarships that require taking even more classes to reach 15 credit hours.

2. Music Majors are patient and resilient.

It takes a special kind of person to agree to spend eight hours a week in an ensemble for zero credits. On top of that, music majors spend hours in practice rooms grinding out scales and pieces.

3. Music Majors are passionate about what they do.

Nobody would sign up for this much work if they weren't passionate about music and everything that comes with it. Some music majors are working towards performing in a professional orchestra, and others dream of having their own students someday. Either way, everyone shares a passion for the art and that brings us all closer.

4. Music Majors make their own little family.

Because music majors are so busy, most of their friends are other music majors. Because of this, the College of Music is a tight-knit group. We form a music family of other students who are also struggling through counterpoint and sight-singing.

5. Music Majors can schedule just about anything.

When it comes to time management, music majors are on top of it. Sometimes there are days when meals just aren't possible, but those are few and far between. Music majors can plan a day like nobody's business. A one-hour break? Perfect for practicing for 30 minutes and grinding out that English essay for 20 before running upstairs for a lesson.

6. Music Majors still know how to have fun.

While being a music major is more work than play, we still know how to have a good time whether it's a cozy night in or a fun night out. We live in a different world during the week, but that doesn't stop us from having movie marathons over the weekends.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
