Whenever I meet someone new, I feel like they think I'm an alien. Why? Because I have a shaved head and floppy blue curly hair. I've had colored hair for almost exactly two years now. And there are a few things about having crazy colored hair that will never get old:
1. "Mommy look at that girl!"
Children. They love it. If you have any sort of wacky hair than some kid is probably going to run up to you and ask if your magical, a princess, a space alien, etc. and it is the cutest thing ever. Being shamelessly complimented on something so often judged by society, and having little kids look at you like you just made their whole day is amazing.
2. "Oh God look at that girl over there she looks like a clown."
People judging you. I was once walking through the pants section of a store and overheard a middle-aged woman whisper to her daughter that I looked like a clown. At first I was incredibly offended and wanted to cut all my bright blue hair off, then I remembered, "what's the point of having crazy colored hair if you're going to be ashamed of it?" Having colored hair has been a huge confidence booster for me and has made me so much more comfortable in my own skin. People can judge all they want, I look amazing.
3. "I wish I had your hair."
Jealous people//people positively noticing. I have so many freshman walk up to me at my high school and tell me they wish their mom would let them dye their hair like that because I look so amazing. No matter how bad my hair looks on any given day, I still have people telling me it looks amazing and that they love it. Having colored hair has allowed me to make conversations with so many people I never would have, all because I have blue hair. It makes my social awkwardness go away completely and all that's left is a blue haired beauty queen.
4. "Can I take a picture?" -
The aesthetic. Alright let's be real. Blue hair is super hipster, grunge, whatever the kids are calling it these days. Having blue hair makes taking artsy pictures from difficult, to effortless. You turn in to a walking tumblr post once you have colored hair. You stand out in the crowd as different.
5. Confidence.
Every time I dye my hair, every compliment, every smile or stare, I feel amazing. Although I'm introverted and don't necessarily like people to stare at me, I turned the stares into positive ones. Blue hair allows me to express who I am in all my wild, eccentric glory, especially since my shyness does not allow that.
So if you're considering dying your hair, or allowing your child to dye their hair, know that they will thank you forever. Having dyed hair isn't only a confidence booster, but it makes the people are you smile, and can even help brighten someone's day.
