Don't Stop Reaching Out

As the events that occurred in Orlando have passed, we must not forget to continue to stand together as one.

Spirituality and Practice

In the past couple of weeks, this nation has seen a lot of loss and heartache. Most importantly and very strange, it has hit home in one area in particular, Orlando Florida. Of course I know that everyone and their mother has heard about the death of Christina Grimmie, the largest mass shooting at an Orlando club, and then the death of a two year old boy at Walt Disney World Resort. All of these events happened in a span of less than a week between each other.

America is at a loss of words, but more importantly, citizens of Florida are in shock and don't know what to do next. Floridians are questioning how exactly can we move on from this on and truly grasp everything that has happened. Today we have seen many talks, tributes, handouts, etc. given to the victims of these horrible events. However, I have a problem with this all. My problem is not the fact that people are doing these things, because this is the right thing to do when the county is feeling vulnerable. The problem that I have is that when something horrible goes wrong in the world is when everyone seems to have peace with everyone.

For some strange reason, everyone will put away their differences, dislikes of lifestyles, religions, and points of view, and unite as one. My question to everyone is why now and not before? Why does it have to come to a point that an act of true terror brings us all together? In reality, when you turn on the news all you hear is something bad– how someone was killed, raped, or taken.

A few weeks back, I had just finished a movie with my boyfriend. Afterwards we left the TV on for background noise and the news happened to be on.We turned to each other and started talking about how depressing the news is nowadays. There was not a single positive thing that we had heard on from any of the news reporters in a matter of 15 minutes. Sadness hit me because it's hard to understand why these things happen in the world that I live in today.

So, what is my point to all of this? If bad things are always happening in the world today, why is it that only when a terrorist attack occurs is when people lend out a helping hand? If you really think about it, the amount of people that are killed everyday trumps the amount of people that lost their lives within the past weeks.

I am not saying that the attacks that have happened recently are not horrible, because they are. However, the thing is, bad things happen every day across the world and in our country. We should not stop this act of prayer or love for others. We need to continue it every day and try to bring the nation together. America used to be a nation where people were proud to be a melting pot of differences and unique attributes. We should not forget that and move on after this. We need to continue to fight against terrorism, love one another, and accept the good and the bad in people.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
