No really, why don't men love women anymore? Did they truly ever? Have we always just been there as pretty arm-pieces and child-breeders?
And I'm not talking about chivalry--opening doors and giving your coat don't equal love. No I'm talking about covering girls who are too drunk and need to get home safely. I'm talking about opening the lines of communication so we can create equality and end rape culture.
Why is it that almost everyday that I get on the internet there's another instance of a college athlete getting off easy for sexual assault? Or a judge telling young women to just "keep their legs closed"? Or schools slut shaming young girls for having the audacity to show their collar bones?
You don't have to be a feminist to understand that these interactions between men and women aren't ok. They're detrimental, to men and women's relationships with one another and to society as a whole.
Remember how a nation can't stand divided? That's not just about race. Genders warring against each other is just as debilitating.
So why don't men love women anymore? I truly don't know the answer to that questions. Maybe it started when women had to go to work while the men were off at war. Or maybe it started when women decided to "invade" academia and climb higher on the career ladder. Or maybe our parents just didn't raise us with respect not only for other people, but also for ourselves.
Whatever the cause, we now have a horrible effect: Men who can't take responsibility for their actions towards women, and women who are fed up with men. Ever seen a truly jaded woman? It's not a pretty sight.
So what now, what can we do? Well first off we have to start by respecting and loving ourselves--you can't give what you don't have. Then we have to come together regardless of sex, gender identity, race, etc. and stand up for one another. We are all brothers and sisters in humanity, what's done to one of us, is done to all of us.
Men, learn to love and respect the women around you, and women, teach the men how to treat you; don't take misogyny and sexism as options anymore. Let's start the conversation and bring about some change.
