This presidential race has been an interesting one—on both sides—Republican and Democrat. There have been many ups and downs, candidates from the very left and the very right, and of course, a heap of political drama. Being a part of young voters/first-time voters group, most people expect me to be diehard Bernie Sanders fan, but I certainly am not. I don't feel the "Bern" nor do I want to. Most people ask me if it is because I am a "rebel" or even a Trump supporter, but I am not either of those things... I am a Cuban-American who knows firsthand that socialism is not going to set the American economy on fire, but burn it to the ground. Trust me—you really don't want to #FeelTheBern, but let me explain.
In high school, I was taught a very important concept: "There is no such thing as a free lunch." Let's face it—nothing in life is free. Just think about it for a minute. Some argue, but what about BOGO deals—there is a free item there. I remind them to pause and remember they had to make a purchase in order to receive a free item. Others argue, but what about when you receive a free T-shirt when attending an event? The products to make that T-shirt had to be derived from somewhere, which costs money. The labor behind taking the materials and creating that shirt costs money. The shipping, handling and delivering of that shirt involved more labor, which cost money, so on and so on. So you see someone along the line had to pay for that shirt—yeah, maybe it was not you, but it was someone. No matter which way you look at it, nothing in life is truly "free." So why are college kids and other voters so convinced that Mr. Sanders can make college free?
America is $19 trillion dollars in debt today. No, you are not reading that wrong—this country really is in some serious debt. So before anyone, Republican or Democrat, even begins their presidency, there will be a trillion-dollar debt (a predicted $20 trillion dollar debt, actually, by the inauguration of the new president in 2017). Now that we have the national debt out there, let's continue to move on to how much "free" college is going to cost us (yes, us—we are all in this together). Making college "free" will cost around $725 billion dollars, according to the Wall Street Journal (view image below). Just add those two numbers up, and keep in mind that the sum doesn't even include retirement, Medicare and more.
When I ask my fellow college students how Bernie is going to make college free, they say, "Bernie is going to make the rich pay higher taxes." Before I even get into the math and what Sanders is really going to do, let me just say one thing, becoming rich or being financially successful is the American dream. Why are we going to punish those who accomplish the American dream? And what happens if one day, you make it big and you become tremendously successful in your business? Do you want to have a chunk of your success go towards the government instead of your family? How is that fair? How is that right? The most beautiful part about this country—in my opinion— is that anyone can come here with a dream in their heart, motivation and drive—and with just those three things, they can make it. They can be whatever they want to be, and they can make a better life for their kids. In short, the best part about our great country is the American dream.
Now let's talk money... I decided to visit Bernie Sanders' official website to get the details on his plan to make college free. In short, there was not an "official" plan or many details—but basically, it states that Sanders' plan to make college "free" would cost $75 billion dollars a year, and he plans get it from Wall Street, by implementing a tax fraction plan. That's all. Seems simple, right? Not. According to many economists, Sanders is way in over his head, and free college is not going to be as simple (and short) as he explains on his website.
I have one message to give to all my fellow millennials and all others who want me to feel the Bern...Trust me—we are all going to feel the burn when our economy comes crashing down with Bernie Sanders as our president. If you all think socialism works so well, then why are there Cubans converting old cars into boats or piecing together rafts, risking their lives, to escape? What happened to the American dream of hard work and setting goals in order to get what you need and want? Our founding fathers built this country based on principles, work and faith—not on taking the easy or free way out. So when you go to vote, don't let yourself or your country, get Bern-t.
