School is about to start and you've probably been inundated with articles and lists detailing good classroom behavior that will lead to you getting As. Instead of providing a list of tips like "bring a pen to class" and "don't be late", I'm going to outline some of the most irritating class behaviors. Sadly this is not just a list for freshman, I've encountered all of these behaviors. I'm not guaranteeing you'll get an A if you follow these tips but your professor might actually like you and your classmates won't give you a hilariously mean code/nickname. And that's all that matters
1. Don't come in loudly talking about how hungover you are. Everyone probably is too and doesn't appreciate you making theirs worse or they just don't care.
2.Don't ask a question that was just answered by the professor. Ask the person next to you or ask after class
3. It's ok to argue with your professor but not when it's just you for a solid 20 minutes. No one appreciates you showboating.
4. Don't look to members of a certain ethnic group to be the voice of their people
5. Don't tell people who they should and should not vote for in the 2016 presidential election unless they ask for your opinion/advice. Yes it's election season, no we don't need to hear about it just yet.
6. Resist the urge to constantly have your hand in the air. It's the first day/week, chill and give someone else a chance to ask a question or speak.
7. Don't bring a full blown meal to class. It's annoying and distracting (especially if it smells or is messy).
Most of these rules should be applied throughout the semester but at the very least you want to make a semi-decent impression in the first week so try to avoid the temptation of engaging in any of the above behaviors. If you're ever in doubt just follow President Obama's philosophy; "don't do stupid shit".
Enjoy syallabus week!
