A note before reading: I do not support Donald Trump. I do not find him qualified in the least bit to run this country. However, I can see exactly why many people do support him, despite his countless racist and degrading comments, somehow managing to insult pretty much every minority that exists in our country, and having literally no relevant experience that makes him a legitimate presidential candidate.
Donald Trump is a reality star, plain and simple. His show “The Apprentice,” which he hosted from its beginnings in 2004 until 2015, has been wildly popular over the last decade. Like any other game show, business contestants are eliminated one by one each week until one remains, and Trump would give them $250,000 and a job at one of his many businesses. But quite honestly, as a television star and real-estate mogul, you can only go but so far in politics. His presence in popular culture, both on television, as well as his Twitter presence, has made him incredibly well known among younger voters. While Twitter gets his message out to the younger generations, many college students as well as other young people across the country are not impressed by his constant insults as well as his questionable remarks.
Now that we know his background, we can see how Donald Trump has gotten some of his vocal skills he has used throughout this election. He is excellent at getting his points across and affecting voters with his words; it is literally his job. As a television personality, as well as his role as a businessman, Trump spends the majority of his time with people. If he can’t convince people to do what he wants, he has no job. If he doesn’t convince people to vote for him, he fails as a politician. So how exactly does he go about doing this?
“Make America Great Again.” You’ve heard it a million times, but what does it mean? Not many young voters know this, but the slogan was first coined in 1979 and used during Ronald Reagan’s 1980 campaign for president. At the time, the country was suffering from high unemployment as well as rapid inflation. This phrase was used to bring up the spirits of the American people, and it worked. Reagan was elected with running mate George Bush, and he served two terms. Reagan is still widely regarded as one of the greatest presidents in American history. Although Trump claims to have made up the statement, and has been working on obtaining a patent for his famous catch phrase, we can all see now that this claim obviously is not true.
The reaction to the slogan is the same now as it was during the Reagan/Bush campaign. Americans everywhere have eaten up Trump’s words like candy. In Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign, he campaigned on the angle of change. After the Bush administration, the American people wanted change. We had been struggling for years through various wars in the Bush administration, and it was time for something new. Obama could see this, so he took the idea and ran with it.
Despite Obama’s questionable experience -- or lack thereof -- as a politician, no other candidate stood a chance. Obama played his cards correctly and was elected in 2008 and again in 2012. Has Obama produced the change he promised? Well, that’s really up to interpretation. But this sense of hope Obama gave the people got him into office, and he achieved his goal of being elected president. Trump is, essentially, doing the same thing: playing off of peoples' emotions.
These days, a lot of people are sick and tired of the Obama administration. With an average approval rating of just 47 percent throughout his term, Americans are searching for something new once again. The idea of making America great again is incredibly appealing to many people across the country, despite Trump giving us very little information on how he is actually going to do so. Trump is essentially toying with us all. He is using his skills as a businessman to convince the people to do what he wants them to do: vote for him.
Many people are turned off by Trump’s ridiculous comments, yet they admire the fact that he is “speaking his mind” or “telling it like it is.” To many people, Trump is saying things that many others were too afraid to say. Trump described his speaking tactics better than anyone else ever could: "I think the big problem this country has is being politically correct.” Additionally, Americans from every education level know exactly what he is saying due to his simple language, and his confidence and charismatic persona make his questionable comments appear as fact to the masses. Trump is just so radically different from every other candidate and from the presidential situation that exists now that it is all people can seem to think about.
I’m by no means a Trump advocate, but I have to give the man credit. Playing the same card as the previous presidential winner in playing with people’s emotions, and also being everything that every other candidate is not. He has won the support of millions of Americans and quite honestly has a real shot at becoming president. He has been dominant in both the polls and in the primaries across the country, winning key states such as New York, Virginia, Georgia, Maryland and South Carolina. The Trump machine has been crushing his opponents, who we all know are better qualified candidates than he. But hey, I guess the new motto of Americans is “the more absurd, the better.”
