If you have never heard of BBC's Doctor Who, you are really missing out. This show has been around since the 60s and follows the adventures of a quirky alien in his big blue spaceship- that also happens to be a time machine. I have yet to watch the classic series, but I have been traveling with the Doctor since the show came back in 2005.
I don't know if I am the only person that came to this realization- that the Doctor is actually a superhero. Though, I am sure I cannot be the only Whovian that feels this way. Here are a few reasons for such a conclusion:
He fights evil. Like every other superhero out there- Superman, Iron Man, Wonder Woman, etc.- he fights for good. He protects the innocent from the bad guys. Sure, most of the time, he doesn't mean to- he just manages to happen upon such situations on his adventures.
He does the right thing. When he happens upon such situations of injustice, he doesn't turn around and leave. He never says, "It's not my problem." He helps out. It is one of his many amiable qualities. Though, that doesn't mean he does the right thing at all times.
He makes mistakes. Perhaps that is one of the reasons he travels with a companion. They act as a sort of guide, reminding him to be compassionate and merciful. Like any other creature on this planet- and in this universe, he sometimes strays off the path. It makes him relatable and real. Everyone makes mistakes, even superheroes.
He can regenerate. He is an alien, after all. As an alien, he is a bit different from humans. As a Gallifreyan, he has the power to regenerate. This means that if he is close to death, or dying, his body will reform and his appearance will change. This means he lives a very long time- he is over 2,000 years old. It makes him extraordinary. It makes him super. It also explains why we see different characters playing his character throughout the series.
He has two hearts. This makes him stronger. It also allows for him to go long periods without breathing. It is just one more thing that makes him the superhero he is.
He has a spaceship/time machine. The Tardis is magical. It's small on the outside and huge on the inside. It is also practically alive. What superhero doesn't need such awesome transportation?
I have only just scratched the surface, but to know the full truth means finding it out for yourself. The Doctor is one extraordinary character and this series is the ultimate adventure. It is well worth a look- you won't be disappointed.
