On May 9, 2017, President Donald Trump fired F.B.I. Director James Comey. Rumor has it that he fired Comey due to his investigation of the ongoing Russian meddling in the 2016 elections. While President Trump may deny these claims, it's most likely true.
Now, let's take a journey back in history...
During the 2016 presidential election, Comey released a statement two weeks before Election Day informing the public that he was re-opening the investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails. This is something that is not supposed to be done. The only time a statement should have been released regarding the emails was if they charged Clinton with something. The Democratic Party and others have reason to believe that this is why she lost the Presidential Campaign. Despite this fault on his part, he has been a very good F.B.I. Director for the past four years.
Comey was appointed to his position by President Obama in June of 2013. In the article, Obama nominates James Comey to Head FBI, it explains as to why he was chosen. Obama quipped that Comey, "stands very tall for justice and the rule of law." Obviously, if Obama, a Democrat, thought a Republican could do this job well, shouldn't Trump have thought Comey was doing grand?
The thing is, Trump did like Comey. All we can continue to ask is, what changed?
Even a couple weeks ago, Trump tweeted that Comey "was the best thing that ever happened to Hillary Clinton in that he gave her a free pass for many bad deeds!" Hmm... Were you not to receive the same treatment if Comey were to find out you did have contact with the Russians, Trump?
However, President Trump did not act alone in this decision. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, according to the White House, was pushing for Mr. Comey's resignation. The reason behind this? Who knows.
While the claim is Comey was fired because of how he handled the emails, both Trump and Sessions implored him for how he handled the situation, calling him "gutsy." And as we all know, how Mr. Comey handled the situation was public information. So why fire him now after it's been months since the incident?
Well, that's the million dollar question. As people react to this news, that's the only question that seems to be arising. Why now?
It seems like we have another politician only looking out for oneself. However, a president to do this? We've only ever had one. But it seems as though history is repeating itself.
President Richard Nixon wiretapped the phones in the Democratic Party's headquarters. This was to see what their strategy was to ensure that he would win the election. He did get re-elected, but after the money trail led back to Nixon and they found hundreds of tapes with recordings, he was put through the impeachment process. Before he could be impeached, he resigned.
A key element in finding out about his deceitfulness was Deep Throat, who we later found out is actually Mark Felt. He told the authorities what Nixon had done.
Trump is walking on thin ice as he continues his presidency of the United States. People are as skeptical as ever, and if it's found out that he manipulated the system in any way, he will begin the impeachment process, much like Nixon did. If he has nothing to hide, why fire someone who did their job well? Unless, of course, he was afraid of what Comey could find. Or he simply changed his mind. He tends to do that a lot.
However, Trump has been meeting with Russian delegates over the past few days, but he has prevented media from finding out what they're discussing. It may be bad, it may not. It's all just a little bit fishy.
Our only hope now is that we'll have a modern-day Deep Throat.
