As many people know, there was a recent incident at the Cincinnati zoo with a gorilla and a kid. Should the gorilla have been shot? Would the option of tranquilizing the gorilla even work? Was the gorilla really going to hurt the kid? None of these questions have answers, but another question that is important is do animals belong at the zoo?
Humans are taking beautiful wild species and putting them in cages that do not have enough room for our own entertainment? Is this fair to the animals? Are the zoos really helping with endangered species? In my opinion, no. The zoos are doing nothing good for these animals because they do not belong trapped in a cage or glass closure, they belong in wild running free. If preserving the species is the only option, they belong in a sanctuary where they will be protected and not just used for entertainment. How many animals look happy at the zoo? Most of the animals just lie around or pace, this is not what they would be doing in their natural habitat.
If we found animals as important as humans the world would be a better place. Not only are zoos unfair to animals, but look at the circus where the animals are abused and mistreated. These animals should be able to choose where they go and what their schedule is, but unfortunately humans think they are more important and instead of doing a humane activity they go and support a inhumane activity just because it is something that they enjoy, but what about the animals?!?!
If we did not cage these poor animals, Harambe would still be alive and that kid would have been uninjured from the fall into the cage (which is where the injuries he sustained were from).
Harambe was killed because a mother was not responsible around her kids around wild animals, is this really justice for Harambe?
I'm sure this is not the first, nor will it be the last of these incidents (unfortunately), but how can we prevent it? I think the answer is simple: value animals.
