Pinterest is the best and worst place to go — I can spend hours scrolling through pages of DIY projects, but that usually results in me spending 50 dollars on supplies to make “Simple and Easy!” projects. Even if it’s something simple, like repurposing something I’m supposed to already have, I go out and buy what I don’t have, just to repurpose a newly bought item. It doesn’t make sense, I know. Why don’t I just buy whatever I wanted the initial item to become? Because I love crafting.
So, for every crafter’s favorite dream, here’s a list of things you actually have that can be repurposed (after it’s been well used, of course).
1. Tank Tap to Crop Top
I love this one. You can take an old tank top - I know you probably have a couple that haven't seen outside of your dresser in years - and convert it to a stylish and flattering crop top.
2. Bottle Cap Candles
Whether they be screw off tops from pop or wine bottles, don't throw them away. You can make your own candle wax and wicks or buy them to put inside the tops. Either way, these colorful candles are adorable mini accessories for any table, dresser, or mantle.
3. Yoga Mat Bulletin Board
Did you try out yoga and it wasn't for you? Or does your mom/friend have an extra mat they're throwing away? Just cut in into whatever sized square you want, or any shape you want, and use double sided tape to stick it to the wall. That's it, pin away!
4. Redesigned Shirt
Some shirts just become boring after a while, and you have the urge to revamp your entire wardrobe. No need to spend all that money, just use extra cloth from a ratty shirt you're throwing away anyways, or buy lace like in this example, and add a personal flare.
5. Shirt to Tote
This one is super easy! Just cut the sleeves off of any shirt and sew the bottom closed. All done! You've got a new tote. This works especially well with shirts that have graphic designs on them, and sweaters also make an adorable bag to carry with you anywhere.
6. Dresser to Bench
This is perfect for changing up the design to a room. After years of use, drawers can start falling out, or the edges of the dresser can just become frayed. Repurpose it by laying the dresser on its side, knocking out a few layers of shelving, and adding paint. I suggest putting a pillow down on the seating part of the bench for a comfortable reading space.
7. Sweater to Pillow
Cut off the sleeves and neck, and all you have left is the boxy shape. Stitch one open end closed, add stuffing through the other, and when it's full, stick the second end close. That's it. You've got a cute, comfy pillow from your old, childhood sweater.
8. Books to Headboard
Glue together the pages in the books first, so they're not flopping around over your head. Then, use a super adhesive to attach all the old books to a base - which can be wood, a poster board, or even that yoga mat we saw earlier - and nail it to the wall above your bed! Perfect headboard for book lovers around the world.
9. Guitar to Plant Holder
Have an old guitar that you never learned to play? Or one that broke long ago? Take off the face and decorate the inner panels. You can use lights, candles, plants, books or whatever you want to spice up the decor.
10. Color Swatches to Mobile
Go to any Home Depot or store of a similar nature and collect all the free color swatches that you can. Cut them into the desired shape, string them together, and attach them to two crossing sticks. You can hang it from your wall as a decoration for your room, or use it as a baby shower gift and give the kid a twinkling mobile for his crib.
11. T-Shirt to Headband
Instructions here.
With a couple criss-crosses and handwork, you can transform any old T-shirt into a cute headband. You can even make a couple for your friends with the leftover fabric.
12. Sweater to Slippers
More detailed instructions here.
This one takes a little more skill, but with a bit of work, you can transform an old sweater into a pair of cozy slippers. Imagine the warmth of that sweater wrapped around cold winter feet? Sounds perfect for cuddling up to a night in and hot chocolate.
