What do you think about when you think of the word "diversity"? I can easily say that I think of skin color and place of origin, but that explanation does not cover all the bases. My eyes were recently opened to the fact that all of my friends are diverse. I am not a part of a group of super similar girls. I am not even a part of group of all girls. I have friends who are athletes, and I have friends who have never ran in their life. My best friends are made up of majors of Biology, Political Science, Accounting, Communication, and so many more.
While sitting in my science class for the non-science people, I noticed that me and two of my best friends are completely the same in the fact that we don’t like science, but still totally different about what we are passionate about. One loves philosophy and politics, while I am too close-minded to have interest in either of them. The other is a business major and I am majoring in English. These do not relate at all, but they are still my best friends.
I attend a liberal arts school that is probably a fourth of the size of most big schools. Everyone may not know each other, but they definitely recognize the same people over and over in the academic buildings, dorms, library, and dining hall. Even when seeing these people around, you can tell the diversity of the school and of the groups of people within it.
I am very happy to be able to say that I have found diversity in my friends. Through school and finding these friends, I have learned that diversity does not just refer to origin and ethnicity.
I have the same relationship with my best friend from home. If you were to list out all of our interests, I am not sure that a single one would match up. We are still best friends but we live very diverse lives.
There is nothing wrong with having all of these differences. It has opened my eyes up greatly to new perspectives and new opinions. Most of my friends and I do not have the same opinion or see things at the same level of importance but everything still works out between us. We are still best friends and nothing continues to tear us apart.
