This topic is a very sensitive and controversial issue, but I think that is why it is time to make some societal changes. I think the most important thing for all of us to remember is that people from different cultures highly impact the enrichment of our learning as individuals, whether it be inside or outside the classroom. In such a developing generation, it is crucial that the diversity in the classroom be expanded to broaden the level of knowledge.
Learning about the real world is often the topic most lacking in school systems in today's generation. Specifically, schools focus more on the country they live in than any other. Having a variety of cultures in the classroom can significantly add to the sharing of knowledge. While the learning may occur in the United States, it does NOT mean that only Americans can learn about other cultures. It is an opportunity for all individuals to share their culture with each other. Learning about other cultures, from people who have experienced them in person for an extended period of time, is highly fascinating. It brings to life what students are reading about in a textbook. It makes a real-world connection, which is beneficial to the expansion of knowledge.
Learning from each other also helps us to understand what terms and behaviors are appropriate or inappropriate towards other cultures. Recently, I was in class and learned that the term “savage” is used differently in Native American culture than it is here. In the United States, the term is used to refer to another individual who is showing extreme strength or bravery. However, in Native American culture it is used as a derogatory term that, actually, holds great offense to those who come from a Native American background. Had I not learned this from my classmates, it may have been a term I could have easily misused in the future. Not only that, but I also learned just how offensive it can be. Learning from each other allows for this communication to occur on what is portrayed as positivity and what can be seen as negativity towards others. Even learning about behaviors can make a huge difference in students futures. It will help them to better understand other cultures and appropriate societal behaviors.
Lastly, and most commonly, having a class full of a variety of cultures sparks curiosity. In today’s generation of students, there are many choosing to study abroad to continue learning about other cultures. Not only that, but studying abroad allows students to learn about themselves and try new things. Studying abroad expands the curiosity that began in the classroom. Not only does diversity in the classroom enrich the learning environment, but it also makes a difference.
As a future teacher, I encourage the expansion of knowledge through collaboration. Encouraging students to share their experiences and backgrounds can only further expand the strength of the learning environment.
