10 things to do during class when you just don’t care.
Many times in your college career, you are going to have one of those classes. You know what class I’m talking about. The teacher drags on, or they repeat what you just read in the textbook so you might as well teach yourself. You hate that class, and you dread going to it. So, how do we survive these classes? I have a survival guide for your mental health. 10 things to do during class when you just don’t care. A humerus guide to surviving college.
1.) Texting: We’ve all done it. We are all guilty of texting during class. It’s so easy to check out and text a friend. To enjoy someone else’s company over the teacher currently standing in front of you is easy. But be careful, texting can be very obvious. Don’t hold the phone directly out in front of you. The teacher will be able to see it. Most importantly, don’t hold it down by your crotch, it looks oddly suspicious. If you can, get a texting application on your computer, that way it looks like you are taking notes. Also the teachers might hate you, secretly. I advise against this one
2.) Facebook: Classic! Facebook is the godsend of class distraction. We can check in with people and family. We can talk with people online. We post our feelings. And the best part is, it’s on your phone or computer. Access to Facebook is easy. Using Facebook can be hidden easily. Especially if you take notes on your computer or laptop.
3.) Pass notes: The stone ages. Remember passing notes back in the 5th and 6th grade? I do. It was a great way to pass the time and get a thrill on the off chance that you got caught. It is just as fun in college, if not better. Just because we are adults in college doesn’t mean we can’t have fun. Find a friend to pass notes with. There is so much more to talk about during class than there was nearly eight years ago.
4.) Art: Let your creative side go. Grab a piece of paper and create art. When you have an idea, you have an idea. Who should prevent you from creating what could be your masterpiece… or scribbles. Everyone likes scribbles. This also won’t work in art class. You are already making art. Refer to the other ways to distract yourself in art class.
5.) Daydream: Day dreaming. Maybe you didn’t get to finish your dream last night and you want to finish the quest your alarm so rudely awakened you from. Or a snoring roommate. Either case, that good dream just left for dead and now is in dreaming purgatory. Or, you want to create a brand new adventure in your head (cue Disney song A Whole New World). I am guilty of losing myself in a dream world many times during class myself. A brand new adventure or world which you could turn into a book maybe, which segways into the next point.
6.) Writing: Write something. Write about that day dream that you had. Write about life. Write about how you just can not anymore. Write about that pumpkin spice latte and your scarves and how they bring you secure feelings of wonderful bliss. Or you could write an Odyssey article… … … but not me, I always pay attention in class. The world is at your fingertips, write what you want to.
7.) Play videogames: This is a high level of don’t care. It takes Mastery skill to play video games during class and not get caught. Maybe choose the back of the room to play video games. But if it’s anything like League of Legends or any real time strategy (RTS) role playing games (RPG); the constant mouse clicking might get a little bit disruptive and annoying in class. So you can, but, highly not recommended
8.) Browse the interwebs for the cat video: Remembering to turn off your sound, perusing the interwebs for the cats is a great way to pass the time. Every time I see a cat, I get an overwhelming YAAAS feline feeling. I love literary illusions. Look up pimple popping videos, fail army videos, dogs, etc.
9.) Actually Pay attention and take notes: WHAAAT! I know, shocker. It might be a difficult class and you need to take notes. So why not take the time to take notes for class. You will retain what you learn and you can do better in class. You may not care, but your grade most certainly will.
10.) Sleep: We have all seen this person in class. We all hate them and judge them, but we are all secretly jealous of them. You will never do it yourself but the thought crosses your mind. Sometimes you’re so tired that you want or need to sleep. But we fight to stay awake. Sometimes coffee doesn’t do the trick. Sometimes we doze off. Being so close to sleep and trying so hard to stay awake can make for some very interesting moments. Head hitting the desk or jerking awake. It’s embarrassing to everyone, but especially to you. Don’t fall asleep during class.
I do not condone the distraction of class time. However, it’s inevitable and happens to everyone. Please remember that your grade comes first. Please distract yourself responsibly.
