To My Distant Step Siblings, This Is What I Want You To Know

I wish things could be different.

To My Distant Step Siblings, This Is What I Want You To Know
Freddy Castro

I don't remember the last time we talked. I know we haven't spoken since at least March; that's when I stopped talking to your mother, anyway.

I hope high school and college are going well for each of you, and that your jobs aren't too demanding. You're both incredibly hard working, that's something I've always admired about both of you. Honestly, I've always looked up to both of you, even though one of you is a few years younger than me. You're wise far beyond your years, and continuously amaze me by the "adult" decisions you make.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm proud of you. Both of you have taught me so much about what it means to stand up for myself, the rewards of hard work, how to find joy in the simplest things, and the importance of optimism when faced with difficulty.

To my sister, you will forever be a role model to me. You taught me how to be a "real girl" instead of a tomboy in my early teenage years, introducing me to dresses and makeup, and Victoria's Secret, and the confidence boost that a perfect fitting pair of jeans gifts you. You should be beaming with pride for the woman you've become.

To my brother, thank you for being a best friend to me when the tomboy side popped up. You never excluded me from throwing a football around, driving the four wheeler, or running around in our backyard woods just because I was a girl. I've heard you're a little rowdy as of late, but you're a good kid. I'm proud of you.

The next time you're home, if you're not too busy, could you give the dogs an extra pat for me? I miss being a part of that address' family more than you know.

Your mother and I haven't been talking for quite some time, as I'm sure you know. I'm sorry for any drama that's brought to your address. I can't imagine the fights between my (and yours, I know he's important to you) dad and her because of it, and I am so sorry that you've probably had to witness some of it. Dad tells me that you've defended us though, my brother and I back here. I owe you for that, really. I only wish I could be half the sister to y'all that you are to me.

Please don't think I've forgotten about you, or that I have any ill feelings towards you. I really do care about you so, so much. I smile each time I see your name pop up on my Facebook news feed, and I love seeing photos to know that you're doing well. Every time I see Dad, I make sure to ask how you're doing, too.

I know we weren't ever extremely close, but I miss you. If you ever need anything, please know that I am here, no matter what the relationship I have with your mother is.

I just wanted you to know,

Your sister

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
