“Distance is just a number.” That is probably one of the most cliche sayings in this book, but after a visit from a long-distance friend last weekend, I was reminded how true this simple expression really is. There’s something to be said for the childhood friend who lives right around the corner, but there’s so much to be grateful for in a long-distance friendship. Here are just a few of the reasons long-distance friendships have the potential to be some of the best friendships you’ll have:
You appreciate the time you get to spend together more.
When you don’t know when your next time together will be, you make sure that every moment counts! Everyone else gets put on hold for a little while so you can enjoy every second of each other’s company.
You never run out of things to talk about.
When you don’t talk everyday, and when you have so many unique experiences, there is never a lull in conversation. Every time you talk, you have a million things to fill each other in on!
You know you have a place to stay in another city, and a personal tour guide when you get there.
For those of us who love to explore, this is definitely a long-distance friendship perk! You may even end up in a town you never imagined. And being with a local, your friend’s hometown will seem like home to you in no time too!
When it’s too late to call someone in your time zone, there’s a chance that they might be up.
When it’s 3 am and all your local friends are asleep, there’s a chance you can catch your friend in another time zone having dinner or breakfast. It’s comforting to know you always have someone awake to hear your late-night crisis or brilliant idea.
It’s the ideal excuse to travel.
Whether you’re going to their town or meeting somewhere in the middle, traveling to see your long-distance friends is a must!
You can teach each other the ways of your hometown.
I don’t know about you, but I love showing off my city. It’s great to be able to share your hometown perks with someone who hasn’t been living them for the past 20 years. You can also learn a lot about your own hometown through their new, fresh perspective.
If distance doesn’t interfere with your friendship, nothing will!
The bottom line is if your friendship spans the miles, chances are you’ll be friends for life! It can be tricky but if you’re both willing to put in the extra effort you know you have a true friendship.
