Everyone's biggest fear in a relationship is distance. Distance means not seeing them as much and not talking to them as much. Distance means not being able to get in the car and drive to see them easily. Distance means sometimes you have to be lonely.
Distance also means learning how to appreciate your significant other. Distance shows dedication and patience. Physical distance only has an effect on a relationship if you let it.
When you are dating someone, they slowly become your best friend. You don’t realize it. You try to not become too dependent because who knows what could happen in the future. But you can’t help it. They are your go-to movie and ice cream pal, the one you want to go exploring with and the one you also want to take naps with.
There comes a point in life when you go your separate ways to take on adulthood, then the decision arises; do we stay together?
Ask yourself a few questions:
1. Do I like them or I do like being in a relationship?
2. Do I still think other people are attractive or do I only find them attractive?
3. Do I love them enough to not let distance get the best of my emotions?
When you separate from your high school best friends to go to college, there is no question on whether or not you want to end your friendship, so why end a relationship? You should be excited to have someone by your side every step of the way! Distance is a good experience. You get to grow independently and grow together at the same time. If you can get through each other’s high and low points, you are strong. Not only do you grow, but you get to watch them grow—and that is a beautiful thing.
Looking back, I had no idea where my relationship was headed. It began as a rekindled fling at the end of my senior year. Being a senior, that carries the expectations of a break up. I got lucky because it didn’t.
Instead, I found my best friend. Someone I never thought would like me because I’m crazy and eat a lot of ice cream but they love me anyway. Someone who now eats ice cream with me weekly and helps me through crazy times. Someone who has inspired me to do my best in everything I do. A man who makes me proud every day.
So to Justin, my best friend who is also my boyfriend, thank you for letting me know that distance doesn’t matter. Thank you for helping me through my first year of college and letting me go crazy over the silliest things. Thank you for letting me be a part of your awesome life and introducing me to your amazing family. It’s easier said than done, but as we approach the day you leave, I have to say that I am excited. I am excited to see you excel in everything you do. You deserve everything you are given. I promise to be there every step of the way—no doubt—because distance doesn’t matter.
