If you recall, I don't generally do neutral eyeshadow. So when I saw Moana and heard Jemaine Clement sing "Shiny" for the first time, I was - for lack of a less pretentious term - inspired. The visuals are mesmerizing, and considering what a cataclysmic year we've all had (with some exceptions), I thought I'd use my last article of 2016 to celebrate one of its only redeeming qualities.
This week: Tamatoa
1. Apply lid shades.
After applying your primer and blending shade, use a shading brush to apply a shimmery orange shadow to the inner third of the lid, and a shimmery red to the outer third. Use a flat brush to apply a gold shadow to the center of the lid (either cream on a dry brush or powder applied wet).
2. Define the outer V and crease.
Use a small fluffy brush to deposit a light navy blue into the outer corner of the lid, then apply a darker blue up into the outer V. Blend all the colors together by applying royal purple into the crease, then deepen the crease with a royal blue shade. Tap the edges of the center shade with the shading brush to blend out a little more.
Apply a pastel blue eyeshadow on a shading brush into the inner corner of the eye and use the same color on a fluffy brush to blend out the edges of the crease shades, then highlight the brow bone with a cream-colored shadow.
3. Tightline and apply lower lashline shades.
Tightline with a light blue eye pencil on the lower waterline and set it with a matching eyeshadow on an angled or smudge brush. Use a navy blue eye pencil to tightline the upper waterline, and apply the same crease shades to the lower lashline, lining it with the purple shade on an angled brush, then smudging the blue shade along the outer half.
4. Apply mascara and top coat.
(I had to redo this part, hence why it looks a little different from the rest of the steps.)
Once all the shadow is blended to your liking, apply a glitter top coat to the center of the lid with a fluffy brush (avoid using craft glitter). Finish the look by applying two coats of a colored mascara. I advise against using a pastel color unless you have naturally light lashes, you use a white mascara base beforehand, or you just want a slight tint to your lashes.
