So here we are, a few short days before New Years and everyone is already talking or thinking about their resolutions. We all come up with ideas of what will make our next year better than the last even if sometimes these plans are unrealistic. Some range from working out more to changing our whole outlook on life. This article has been prompted from a Facebook post I saw in my community this week and the feelings I had towards it. While I will admit to participating in surface resolutions, I believe we could aim for serious ideas so they could benefit more people. So in 2016, I’m challenging all of you to one thing.
Give more than receive.
So what does that mean? In the past year, I believe that the Lord has been constantly showing me how blessed I am. He has also been allowing me to open my eyes to see those less fortunate than me in my community. There are many great ways to help out in the community that do not involve simply giving out money if you don’t have it to give. Volunteer at a shelter, listen to their stories, give them some food or clothes. These are all a few ideas for outreach but are not the only ones. Think of all the many necessities that we take for granted, that many people are struggling to have. We should all strive to make a difference in the lives of others. As it says in Luke 6:38 “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that you measure with it shall be measured to you again.”
We as Christians are urged in many passages of the Bible to serve others. The Lord tells us that by doing these things; we will receive our own blessings. Even if you are not a believer of the Lord, it is easy to see why we should be doing more for these individuals.
So my challenge to you is to simply be human, help out those around you, and don’t be expectant of a thank you.
Happy New Year!
