Before I even start this article, I just want to say that I, in no way, shape or form want to go out of my way to offend anyone.
That being said, I find these things I am writing very necessary to be said.
Lately, I have seen videos from a makeup enthusiast on the explore page of my Instagram. Her makeup is pretty, but you can't help but notice the fact that she is very unhealthy and overweight. Scroll through the comments and you will see a mix of people calling her beautiful/confident, and people telling her she needs to drop weight.
While it is not really someone's place to tell a person to lose weight, calling someone who is clearly obese and unhealthy "confident and beautiful" for flaunting their weight promotes obesity and an unhealthy lifestyle.
There is a huge difference between body positivity and promoting an unhealthy lifestyle.
Body positivity is supposed to be about being okay with not being 5'3" and 100 pounds, not making excuses for being morbidly obese. Body positivity is about being OK with not having defined abs or being able to fit into a size 0, not flaunting your 400-pound obesity as a positive thing.
While it is hard to understand what is going on in someone's life and why their weight may be the way it is, it is not always hard to change it. With the right diet and exercise, you can get down to the weight that is considered healthy for your body.
We see all these amazing transformations on Instagram of people who dropped 100+ pounds. It's definitely possible, regardless of health issues and other factors. One just has to WANT to change.
I am by no means a twig, but I watch what I eat and try to be active to keep myself at a healthy weight.
I take medications that cause me to gain weight, but I make it a priority to ensure that I am healthy. It's not hard, it's possible and it's necessary. Making up excuses isn't going to get you anywhere.
Health is the most important thing in this whole argument, and sorry, but you cannot argue that being 500 pounds is healthy, regardless of how beautiful you look.
