No, me wearing a crop top doesn’t scream that I’m “asking for it.”
Slut-shaming.
Many of you may be thinking “wow, that’s a harsh way to start off an article” but in all reality it isn’t, and it isn’t taken lightly in everyday life.
First off, I want to point out that I personally am not a feminist, however I do feel for women these days. It is hard to go somewhere, wearing something, and not get judged. If I go to a party, wearing a crop top and shorts, there is always two girls in the corner (wearing not much more than I am) judging me for what I'm wearing. And at that same party, there is probably guys who are sure that I am ready to jump in bed with them, just because of my clothing. Let’s flip it around...
But, have you seen what he is wearing?
"Last night, I was at a party and a guy took his shirt off, he must have been asking for it."
"Last weekend I went to this rager and I saw a guy with a sleeveless V-neck t-shirt on, he really must have been trying to show something off he HAS to sleep around all of the time."
"A few months ago I went to a party and a guy passed out drunk and got taken advantage of. If he wouldn’t have been asking for it, and drinking so much than maybe it wouldn’t have happened to him, what a slut."
"Omg, Brad sleeps around with so many girls, he must have so many STD’s at this point."
"The other day at a party, Josh didn’t make a cup in beer pong and had to do a naked lap, only a slut would actually do that."
All of these statements are slut-shaming, and how ridiculous do they actually sound when they are turned around on guys?
Pretty ridiculous if you ask me.
Girls everyday are told to express themselves, but when they do they get bashed for it. If you dress in a crop top and jeans to a party, you’re a slut. But if you wear jeans and a long sleeved shirt, you’re a prude. The point is girls just can’t win.
Slut-shaming isn’t just name calling and humiliation, it can result in girls being self-conscious about themselves and leave them wondering what it is that they did wrong.
But now you see how stupid it sounds when you replace guys with girls? Next time you decide to slut-shame a girl for what she’s wearing, or what happened to her under certain circumstances think about how it’s going to affect her.
