The first debate of the 2016 presidential election is finally upon us. On August 6th, the top ten Republican candidates will battle it out in a two-hour debate in Ohio. While the final list isn’t set yet, it’s safe to say that Donald Trump, Jeb Bush, Scott Walker, Ben Carson, Rand Paul, Mike Huckabee, Marco Rubio, and Ted Cruz are in the top ten, and therefore have a spot on stage. The remaining two spots are likely to go to John Kasich, and either Chris Christie or Rick Perry.
The candidates that don’t make the top ten will have an hour-long debate at 5 p.m. ET, being dubbed by some as the “kiddie table.” Candidates here include Lindsey Graham, Carly Fiorina, George Pataki, Bobby Jindal, and Rick Santorum. The final decisions about placement will be announced on August 4th, just two days before the debate.
While all eyes will no doubt be on Trump, all of the candidates have a lot to gain, but also a lot to lose, from these debates. The main event will be the top ten debate at 9 p.m. ET, but the 5 p.m. debate will be a place for potential moderates to rise. For example, if Kasich ends up in the 5 p.m. debate, I have no doubt that he will shine as a bright candidate for the GOP nomination. If he earns a spot in the 9 p.m. debate, he might be overshadowed by bigger names and more candidates to compete with for speaking time.
If you’re anything like me, you’re going to treat the debate like a mix between a football game and a stand-up comedy show. While I identify as a Republican most of the time, some candidates just make it too easy to hate on the Grand Old Party. So in honor of the upcoming debate, here are a few of the more memorable quotes that have been said by 2016 candidates from both parties.
“Just because a couple of people on the Supreme Court declare something to be ‘constitutional’ does not make it so.”
-Rand Paul, June 2015
He’s referring to the Supreme Court’s decision in King v. Burwell, which upheld federal health care exchanges, an important part of Obamacare. However, the founders designed the Supreme Court to do exactly what Paul has said – to ensure that actions taken by Congress are constitutional.
“Immigrants are more fertile, and they love families.”
-Jeb Bush, June 2013
In his defense, his words were coming from a good place, which is more than some candidates can say. Arguing for immigration reform, he went on to say later in the speech, “Immigrants create an engine of economic prosperity.” So, he’s definitely better than Trump on this front.
“The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.”
-Donald Trump, November 2012
But some Chinese people, he assumes, are good people.
“Planned Parenthood isn’t a healthcare provider any more than Benghazi was a ‘spontaneous protest.’”
-Mike Huckabee, July 2015
I don’t care if you’re pro-choice or pro-life, this statement is factually incorrect. Only 3 percent of Planned Parenthood’s budget goes toward providing abortions, the other 97 percent goes towards providing healthcare to both men and women.
“Don’t let anybody tell you that it’s corporations and businesses that create jobs.”
-Hillary Clinton, October 2014
“The last 24 hours at the United States Supreme Court were among the darkest hours of our nation.”
-Ted Cruz, June 2015
This was said in response to the decisions on King v. Burwell and Obergefell v. Hodges, which upheld federal healthcare exchanges and established that banning gay marriage is unconstituional. Even if you don’t like the Affordable Care Act or gay marriage, it is just plain offensive to compare it to some of the actual problems that America has faced.
Although this article has highlighted a lot of extreme comments, the majority of what the candidates say aligns with the basic beliefs of their party. It’s been predicted that this debate could pull in the largest audience for a debate in cable history. If you’re not busy on Thursday night, I encourage you to watch. If you’re a Democrat, you can watch in order to have a sense of who your candidate will be competing against in the general election. And if you’re a Republican, you can sit back and root for your favorite for the primaries. Don’t forget to make some popcorn, it should be a great show.
