It is our civic duty to vote for the president of the United States. I can remember being in middle school and wondering why I have to wait until I’m 18 to give my opinion on who runs our country. Well, 2016 has rolled around and this election could possibly be the largest debate in history. Like I said, I have waited so long to vote, but because of my options on the ballot, I could not bring myself to vote for either candidate and this is why.
I don’t know much about politics, and growing up I never really talked about it with my parents. They never told me whom they have ever voted for because to them it is very personal. All I know is they are both republican. Does that make me republican? No, it makes me nothing. I am neither party. I am independent.
A lot of people voted for both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, but I did not vote for either. From what I have heard during their speeches, neither of them have given me a reason to want them to run my country. Both of them constantly threw inappropriate low blows at each other. I sat there in front of my television thinking, “Okay, so what exactly will you two be doing to benefit our country?” It was hardly answered.
Here is my take on it, and if you disagree I am okay with that because you have your opinion and I have mine. I would never vote for Trump. The way he spoke to Hillary during the debates infuriated me. If he talks to a woman on public television like that, how does he treat his wife when they argue? What does he say to his daughter when she disappoints him? Maybe he will just, “grab them by the p****”….are you kidding me? He says what he thinks without pondering what the repercussions might be. If he says one wrong thing to one important person, this country will be blown up. I actually cannot imagine how the meetings with all the different leaders of different countries will go. I am personally not okay with having someone the face of America be a white privileged man who says and does what he wants whenever he wants because he has money and a gorgeous wife.
You could say I might be a feminist or maybe I just don’t like when women are treated with disrespect because I personally refuse to let a male speak to me in a condescending manner. With that being said, I still couldn’t bring myself to vote for Hillary. Whether I like her or not, she is a liar. The FBI not once, but twice has investigated Hillary Clinton. I don’t want the leader of our country to be a criminal. She seems to change her mind a lot when it comes to solving issues or making a plan. She wants to please everyone, but we all know life doesn’t work that way, at all. The president must have a steady platform and opinion about how they want to lead our country, and she doesn’t.
Although I didn’t vote for either party, I understand I could have voted for other people for other titles, but truthfully I don’t know enough about them to do so. I didn’t think my opinion was relevant. I understand why people would vote for Trump and I also understand why people would vote for Hillary. Maybe my opinion is irrelevant to you, but it is important to see all sides and accept them.
Regardless, Donald Trump is the president of the United States of America. That is what happened and it will not change. I watched a video of people flooding the streets of Richmond, VA because of the presidential outcome. They were crying, screaming and yelling crude things. Trump has not even taken office yet. We should embrace him or at least let our voices be heard in an appropriate manner. We can protest racism, protest inequality, protest xenophobia, protest homophobia, protest hate, but never should we become it.
