9 Things I'd Rather Have Than Birthday Cake

Unpopular opinion, but not everyone loves cake.

Yes, cake haters DO exist. I personally am not one of them, but I know a few who are. And when it's their birthday, it used to be kind of hard to figure out what the heck to make them instead. But through trial and error, I have come up with some possibilities. Here are my suggestions.

1. Pie

We all have that one friend who thinks pie is better than cake. Try to find out what their favorite is, or go with the classics like apple and chocolate cream!

2. Donut Cake

It's no secret donuts are the fruit of the Gods, and who ever decided to make donut cake a thing is a GENIUS. If you give your friend one big donut they can have all for their own selfish pleasures, they will love you til the day you die.

3. Brownies

People prefer brownies to cake because the texture of brownies is a lot fudgier, so you get more of a chocolate taste. To get this taste from a mix, just use two eggs instead of three. Feel free to add their favorite mix ins such as extra chocolate chips, or nuts if they're not allergic.

4. Ice cream sundae

Sometimes people can't choose their favorite flavors of ice cream because there are sooo many good ones. My advice is to buy a carton of each kind of flavor your friend likes along with their favorite toppings. Then make a giant ice cream buffet for them that way they can eat as much or as little as they would like!

5. Croquembouche

This is for the culinary adventurous! A croquembouche is a French dessert where cream puffs are stuck together in the formation of a Christmas tree. Don't panic at the immense size, you can make mini ones to, and don't attempt to make your own puff pastry because you will cry. Just go to the grocery store and buy some frozen cream puffs, then stick them together with melted chocolate, and stick them together so the chocolate can harden and you have created an architectural masterpiece.

6. A Giant Batch of Cookies

This is one of those cases where your friend can eat the entire jar and not feel guilty because these were made entirely for them. Make their favorite kind or stock pile their favorite store brand. The cookies should go on a giant platter that is a solid color so as to make the cookies stand out all the more. My last suggestion is to stack the cookies in a creative formation so they resemble a giant star or spiral!

7. Mac and cheese

Some people detest all things sugary and prefer a more savory option. For a birthday mac and cheese, I would suggest you find a recipe where you can bake the mac and cheese in the oven with breadcrumbs that way there is a crust you can stick the candles in

8. Pizza

Everyone loves pizza so there's absolutely no way to fail with this. Order their favorite toppings and be sure to ask for extra!

9. Pancakes

Because who doesn't love breakfast? Be sure to stack them nice and high with as many pancakes as they would like. You can use a mix or make them from scratch.

Good eating and happy birthday!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
