With the influence media has on our minds today, it is difficult not to believe some of the very convincing myths behind depression and suicide flooding the internet.

There are many falsities behind teen depression that lead to our misinterpretation of a topic that is so prevalent in today's society, and it is time we understand the third most common cause of death among young adults.

Firstly, many dismiss depression as mere sadness; they don't take it seriously. However, depression should not be taken lightly as it is a complex mental health disorder that many times requires medication. And, while depression is treatable, antidepressants alone aren’t always enough.

The Grace Loncar Foundation helps break these myths and educate, as well as aid those experiencing teenage depression. It is organizations and foundations like these that are the key to both understanding those suffering from depression and knowing how to prevent suicide.

In addition, they use social media to spread positive messages of hope to those going through similar circumstances.

Getting involved and showing support is paramount in order to destigmatize mental illness and make a difference. Rather than using social media to misinform ourselves, we should be using it to educate others and crush the negative connotations and myths associated with depression. If you are given a platform to speak out, use it.

As Abby Loncar, the founder of The Grace Loncar Foundation, said, "A person who takes Advil has a headache, a person who takes insulin is diabetic, a person who takes mood stabilizers is bipolar, and a person who takes antidepressants is depressed. It is time we show the same compassion to the invisible illnesses of this world."

Depression is not a choice, neither is it a sign of self-pity, infirmity, or negligence. Mental wellness should be taken just as seriously as physical wellness. The first step to preventing teen suicide and making a difference is to be informed.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
