In my house, we have a lot of birthdays. Often this involves cake, and in a house full of chocolate fiends, you can guess what the flavor usually was. It doesn't stop there, though, as everyone likes a different kind of chocolate cake (believe it or not, everyone in my family is high-maintenance). Thanks to this, I've had a lot of chocolate cake in my time, and have learned what I like and what I avoid.
Recipes included so you can make your own judgments.
1. Molten Chocolate Cake
That's right. Not just regular chocolate cake, but a tiny individual serving of chocolate cake that breaks open and flows all over everything. It's tiny, melty, and chocolatey. What beats that?
2. Red Velvet Cake
Red velvet cake and cream cheese frosting? Name a more iconic duo. I'll wait.
Cupcake form, regular cake form; even in cookie for, red velvet is out of this world. +7 points for the color.
3. Chocolate Layer Cake
Another enhanced version of regular chocolate cake. Chocolate cake with stuff shoved between it. Is it frosting? Is it jam? Is it something else that I've never had before? It just might be!
4. Devil's Food Cake
Not gonna lie, I can't always tell the difference between devil's food cake and regular chocolate cake. I know devil's food cake is supposed to be fluffier and richer, and therefore slightly better than plain old chocolate cake.
5. Chocolate Cake
It's chocolate cake. How can you go wrong? Hint: You can't.
6. Flourless Chocolate Cake
I've only had flourless chocolate cake a few times, and while it isn't the worst thing I've eaten, it's a little too thick to be higher up on my list. However, it's still pretty darn good.
7. Fudge Cake
Fudge cake is pretty similar to flourless chocolate cake in consistency, and it sticks to the roof of my mouth and I need a lot of almond milk to get it down. Again, that's not to say it's not good, but sometimes I come close to choking.
Guess why they sometimes call it Death by Chocolate.
8. Black Forest Cake
Black forest is pretty good, but maraschino cherries and chocolate is just not a combination I'm a huge fan of.
9. German Chocolate Cake
Maybe it's just the way my mom makes it (sorry, mom), but I just do not like German chocolate cake. Coconut and nuts and maraschino cherries and caramel- no. Just no.
I don't doubt that there are many more types of chocolate cake that I haven't tried, but this is where I think it stands.
