"Fame." Popularity. Fortune. Monetary value. Praise. Admiration. Desires. These all seem to be the standard and stereotypical connotations of the word "fame," right? For the majority of celebrities that we constantly see on television, having all of these attributes of prominence and stardom seem to be the equivalent of having icing on a cake. What may feel like a glorious life of perfection to some stars, is often a life disguised as depression, instability and exhaustion for others.
As we each have our different perception of the term, I personally like to believe fame is what you make of it. The grass is always greener where you water it. As an individualistic society that's constantly desiring to be noticed, heard and praised, there's always a good question that should be asked as to why people do certain things. There's always a reason behind every dream and every goal. For some, it may be what seems to be the epitome of success equals fame. But is notoriety and stardom really what people should be striving for? What is it good for? And for those who desire it, what's the prominent reason behind why you do?
American singer and song-writer Tori Kelly has reflected upon the topic of fame by using her own proper experience now that she's had a good couple of years in the entertainment industry. From paper to pen, "Funny," deriving off of her 2015 "Unbreakable Smile" album, has always been a spot-on observation of the ups and downfalls of wanting and having stardom. Here are 5 lyrics from the song that really hit home every time I listen to them. What's your purpose behind everything you've ever wanted to accomplish?
1. "What is your definition of a true super star? Is it beauty? Is it money? Is it power? Is it fame? Are you in it for the glory? What's the purpose? What's the gain?"
2. "Your-so-called friends you're leaning on, but all they do is take. You say it's fine but deep inside you wish you could escape."
3. "Everything you ever wanted got you tied up in chains. Be careful how you play the game."
4. "Cause the same ones that shun you are the same ones that love you. The same words that break you are the same words that shape you."
5. "If you lose your soul, you'll lose it all. If you're at the top, then brace for the fall
Surrounded by faces and no one to call. Funny how it all goes around."
