How To Defeat Post Step Sing Sickness

Some might be sad that Step Sing has ended and we'll be waiting another year to perform on the Wright Center Stage, but others are eating cough drops like they're candy and running low on energy.

Getting sick during Step Sing season is almost inevitable. You are spending hours with people every day singing, dancing and let's be honest not looking your absolute best. Then show week comes and through the dress rehearsals, group dinners and family visits, your voice is gone by the final show.

After three weeks of nothing but Step Sing, reality is back and you have to make it through class even though you could just sleep all day. Here are some ways to beat Post Step Sing Sickness.

1. Soup

And not the soup from the Caf. Hot soup will soothe your throat. I suggest splurging and getting a friend to pick you up some soup from Panera, but a can of Campbell's Chicken Noodle soup will do the job.

2. Pain Relief

A trick that I learned is that Tylenol and Advil include different active ingredients which means while it says that you should take Tylenol every few hours, if you're still in pain you can take an Advil as well.

3. Cough Drops

Cough drops can come in handy when your throat feels like it's on fire 24/7. You never want to be that person with a coughing attack during the middle of class and this will help you.

4. Honey

After performing a week full of shows and straining your voice a spoonful of honey might be a good idea. The honey will coat your throat better than a cough drop, but is still only a temporary fix.

5. Exercise

Of course if you have the flu or congestion in your chest, going for a run isn't the best idea. Then again if you are just feeling bad, exercise can always help because it releases endorphins.

6. Rest

Just because you haven't seen your friends in a while because of your busy schedule, doesn't that you have to now. Make sure that you're getting some rest and recovering.

7. Wearing the appropriate clothing

This time of year the weather is constantly changing so it's important to check the weather before leaving your dorm or apartment for class. You could need a heavy jacket, rain coat or if you happen to live in the south, you could get away without a jacket and opened toed shoes this time of year.

Whether you are just feeling a little bad or have never been more sick, going to the doctor is the best thing that you can do for yourself. If health services on campus is too busy try going to an urgent care nearby. They can work miracles and will have you feeling better before your test on Thursday.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
