This week, I received my Big, Teresa Gonsalez. For those who are unfamiliar with sorority phrases, a big is a mentor for new members, and they become like moms to them. Their Big's Big is the new member's GB, like their grandmother. This traces back to the founder of the chapter of each sorority. Getting a Big is a huge step for us Littles. While discussing who I thought was my Big, with the clues she gave, my friend told me something that made me question what it means to be a 'Sorority Girl'.
Stereotypes. They're everywhere. There's the stereotypical jock, nerdy girl, and the oblivious sorority girl. So what is the stereotype for a sorority girl? For most, these girls are preppy, obnoxious, skinny and pretentious. These girls are viewed as stupid, socialites who only care about the next trend or the hottest boys. These girls are viewed as careless, party-goers who drink too much. These girls are viewed as unfriendly, conceited, and selfish. This may be true for certain sororities, but certainly not with the girls I've met within Greek Life.
Alpha Sigma Tau, is my soon-to-be sorority. We strive to make change through our philanthropy, especially for women. The vision of the sorority is to empower women, which is important within and outside the sorority. The girls are there to help one another, whether with academics or to simply have someone to eat lunch with. These girls will always be there for one another, no matter if help is needed at 1 am or 3 pm. If a sister needs a ride to the store, one with a car will help. If a sister needs opinions on an outfit at the mall, for approval for rituals, then 80-some-odd girls will be at her side telling her what they think.
This makes me proud to say: I am not a stereotypical sorority girl. I am a girl who is within a sorority. A few of the best friends I'll ever have are right by my side every step of the way, whether they are in my pledge class, my branch, or just a sister I've met. These friendships are for life, and are definitely worth having. Alpha Sigma Tau, as do many of the other sororities, promote the love and support of women in general. I am so proud to soon be a part of such an amazing sisterhood.
