Dear Class Of 2017

Here's some things I've learned in my freshman year of college that I wish I was told in high school.

Dear Class Of 2017

College is really tough.

High School seniors, I'm talking to you.

College is difficult, but maybe not in the ways you might expect. Professors are people too – not all-powerful beings that only care about your tuition. They are generally very forgiving if you communicate with them (especially if you attend a small school).

Some assignments are actually easier than those from high school (I think reading a chapter in a book is definitely easier than 30 trigonometry problems).

Don't expect constant academic struggle – some people thrive in this new environment. You don't go to the same class four days a week, and you have so much time, especially during the first few months of your first semester, with your schedule full of Gen Eds. (Of course, this isn't usually the norm as the semester goes along, but college isn't the nightmare your high school teachers preach.)

College is definitely academically challenging, no matter what major you pursue, but one of the hardest parts is dealing with the collision of the spheres of your life that you're used to keeping separate.

You live at school. Your academic life, social life and home life gets all mixed together. Everything seems to be crashing down all at once: you're behind in schoolwork, juggling new friendships and you just want to take a nap.

You have to quickly realize the faults in your old study habits, unlearn them, and learn new, effective ones while staying on top of everything.

You learn that you've been studying wrong this whole time. You learn that your time management skills are complete 💩, which doesn't help because now you have a lot of time... too much, yet never enough.

You rapidly learn who you are through many, many conflicts:

You realize even though you're an extrovert, you still need peace and quiet.

You learn that you can maybe love people better when you don't live with them.

You learn your body can't handle 5 all-nighters a week and you physically can't live off caffeine.

You learn that you can do a lot of things you never would have done if you weren't thrown into adulthood so far from mommy and daddy.

Yet, as you learn so much about yourself, never before have you felt so lost.

You really ask yourself who you are, what you're made for, what your passions are and what you're destined to do and be. Do I really love this? Do I really want to do this my whole life?

You want to make friends and have new experiences, but you still crave the familiar faces and the comfort of home.

Above all, you learn that college is really tough... But so are you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
