In 2008, two guys were pissed that they couldn't find a taxi. Now, eight years later Uber has extended to 382 cities worldwide. I often consider how hectic getting rides used to be before Uber, and the amount of unsafe driving that occurred before getting a ride literally meant opening an app and tapping one button. While this service seems simple in nature, every good Uber driver knows that when they press that accept button it can mean so much more than getting someone from point A to point B.
I forget to thank the important people in my life more often than I would like to admit. And at this point in my life, my Uber drivers are for sure some of those people. So here it is. One of the most well deserved "thank yous" of the year.
Dearest Uber driver, thank you.
Thank you for picking me up, even in the wee hours of the evening. Thank you for offering me mints and turning up the music when I yell, “I love this song.” Thank you for calming me down when I come to the realization that I lost my debit card. Thank you for agreeing with me when I explain that boys are stupid and that I can dance way better than that other girl.
Thank you for making that pit stop at Taco Bell and for helping me decide what to order. Thank you for politely explaining that we cannot squeeze in an extra person, even as I relentlessly explain that she is my very best friend. Thank you for driving slow enough for me to roll the window down for fresh air and not being mad when I stick my entire face outside of the car to take it in.
Thank you for asking me how my night went, and then listening to me as I relay to you every single dirty detail. Thank you for telling me that I don’t suck at singing even though I couldn’t hit a single note on time or in tune. Thank you for the life advice and for lightening the mood with some good knock-knock jokes. Thank you for waiting to make sure I made it into my house safely.
Thank you for being the un-thanked hero of my generation. It is no secret that twenty-somethings everywhere owe you big time for not only the safe ride home, but all the other things that come with accepting our request.
