Like every other American, I have found myself to be fascinated by Starbucks' holiday cups and holding an opinion on the matter.
First of all, Christmas should not be dependent on what your coffee cup looks like. If a paper cup dictates your holiday spirit, you're celebrating Christmas incorrectly. I don't understand why something as simplistic as a paper cup has generated so much attention.
Next, as the clear winner of this fiasco, Starbucks achieved what very few companies can do successfully: totally dictating conversations throughout the United States. Virtually every person has an opinion on the matter. Celebrities, politicians, neighbors, classmates, family members, everyone is talking about Starbucks. Now, obviously not all of these opinions are positive, but I am a firm believer that no publicity is bad publicity.
While not all of these opinions are positive, I think the most ironic part is that Starbucks released a simple non-denominational cup to avoid such controversy. So, by attempting to avoid controversy, Starbucks is now plagued with it. This campaign is proof that no matter what you do you truly cannot please everyone.
So Starbucks, as much as I wish you would have pursued a bold Christmas themed cup because it is my favorite time of the year, in a time where Merry Christmas is being replaced with neutral greetings like "Seasons Greetings" and "Happy Holidays," I understand your decision to remain neutral and to not stir up buzz.
The bottom line of this fiasco is that everyone is entitled to their own opinions. However, does everyone really need to have an opinion regarding a singular red cup? Isn't there anything more worthwhile to discuss?
