Dear Society, Stop Being So Sensitive

Even a classic like A Charlie Brown Christmas wouldn't be made today.

Dear Society,

I don't know what happened, or why suddenly everything everyone does is offensive. I mean, I can't even share a video of a group of kids doing something nice for a cop on Facebook without people getting offended. We live in a society that is so concerned with being politically correct that we have forgotten how to live our lives.

It amazes me that we have to be so careful about how we act and what we say that a classic movie like A Charlie Brown Christmas wouldn't even be able to be made today. The way a character like Lucy treats Charlie Brown would be considered bullying and harmful to others when in all reality it is a story about how a group of kids who come together to tell the miraculous story of Christmas.

Kids are growing up in a world where they are taught that everyone is a winner. Every sports player has to receive a trophy at the end of the season because we fear that if only the deserving are rewarded the other players will think less of themselves or be depressed. The truth is, not everyone can be a winner; not every kid who plays soccer is going to be the best, and we do more damage by not teaching them to have tough skin.

College campuses have taken to creating safe spaces for students who are upset with the outcome of the election, and some have even gone as far as to take down the American flag because students believe it is a sign of hatred. Sure, maybe not everyone is going to be happy with the outcome of the presidential election, but the truth is that there had to be a winner and there had to be a loser, and if you can't except that your nominee didn't win then you shouldn't be living in a country that utilizes the democratic system.

Honestly society, you need to stop being such a cry baby. Realize that there are winners and there are losers. Understand that not everybody can be the best, and stop being so concerned with what everyone else will think or how your actions will affect others. We were not created to all see eye to eye all the time. God blessed us with the ability to have different opinions and to share them with the world. We were blessed with the ability to be different both inside and out, and we are blessed to live in a place where we have the right to freedom of speech. Society, please stop trying to force me to adjust the way I express myself and my opinions just because it may make someone around me 'uncomfortable'. I was raised to have a tough skin and be able to accept when I have lost or when I am wrong. My wish for you is that very soon you will be able to start teaching these qualities again.

Sincerely,

A girl tired of being 'Politically Correct'

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
