Dear: Old Me

Dear old me,

You will be fine. Be gentle and loving to yourself because it is not the end of the world. I know you feel like you've had it rough. I know that you felt like you gave it everything you had and failed. But, you didn't. Why did you waste time destroying your mind and body? All you needed was guidance in the right direction, but the only person that could do that was you. Believe in yourself, young one, because you will go on to seek greater adventures. Stop wasting your time loving the all the wrong people. You should be giving the same amount of love to yourself as you gave to them. You are more than what you think you are and it will take some time, but you will realize that, I promise. Right now, you still have some internal conflict. This might be something you will deal with for the rest of your life but that is OK. Remember, you are more than peoples' opinions of you. By the way, those people who were so mean to you are now irrelevant, and you can't be any happier without them.

Dear old me,

I know you feet that all this pain was going to last forever, but it doesn't. And sometimes these pains come back and haunt you but it doesn't cripple you anymore. You will appreciate yourself for not giving up because you go on to reach others and make your environment beautiful. Back then, things were so difficult that you wanted to cut your duration here on earth short. I am so glad you didn't. Your life is a brief moment in time where tomorrow is not promised, in which you need to find yourself and discover what is around you. The world is ugly, but it tries. And you go on to learn that there isn't much you can do to change the way people think but you don't let it hinder you. You eventually learn that humanity is not what you want it to be but you can change yourself and surround yourself with people that love you. You also learn that life is a gift and that you are one, too.

Dear old me,

Please learn to accept the things you cannot change. Whether it is about yourself, or the world you live in. Your nose is adorable. Your dark brown eyes are just lovely. No, your lips are not "too big." And your hair, well- it still continues to change and it is fabulous. Stop worrying about your weight. You are healthy and you are exactly where you should be. Look in the mirror and love your qualities with everything you have. You deserve it. As for everyone else- well, maybe you are on the wrong planet but since you are here, do the best you can. Stop being upset about the violence and hatred and inequality and take it for what it is. You have got to toughen up or you will let this world make you cold. You will let the world keep you down. But let me tell you, the world has too many beautiful sights that you have yet to explore. The vocal minority of the unjust and prejudice isn't greater than the silent majority of the righteous and accepting.

Dear old me,

You will be fine.

Love,

The future you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
