As the election of Donald Trump proved, hate is just as prominent in America as it was eight and even 16 years ago. There really is no telling why so many hate groups, Neo-Nazis or even the KKK clung to Trump when his presidency was announced.
Perhaps it was the fear mongering or the hate-filled rhetoric that dictated his speeches. Speeches that he would lead the crowd in chanting “Build that wall,” and “Lock her up,” which would result in thunderous applause.
But, I digress, Trump is not exactly the nicest guy in the world, he did, however, do something no other candidate in the history of American politics has done: taken on the media and lived to tell the tale.
In 2016, the news media has become so saturated with political bias it truly is difficult to tell the real from the “fake.” Having a fake news problem is never good for any country’s media or the country itself for that matter.
It certainly doesn’t make things better that people in this country find themselves trusting the click-bait stories that litter their Facebook feed rather than media institutions like "CNN", "ABC" or "Fox."
Print media has not done much to soften the fallout from the political shake-up that may be on the horizon. In a time where hard-hitting journalism has the potential to be the only true critique on topics like the President-Elect, ISIS and the current state of the country it's sad that it's only coming from none other than outlets like "Teen Vogue."
No disrespect to Teen Vogue, their articles can be hard-hitting and powerful but it is the sense that a country's media has the sense to tell a truth to the public.
2016 will go down as one of the most surreal years in recent memory and that could also be said for how America's media has begun to shape itself according to the times. No longer are the days when newspapers were the most common form of social events, we have the internet for that now. Television news has changed rapidly in the past 15 years, as actual news stories are pushed to the side for sensationalism.
This influx of news media that has come in as a result of Vice or NPR, even Odyssey itself, has began to flourish into a conclave of both new and seasoned millennial journalists all who want to tell the news as it should be told.
Sometimes that may not be the most polite, but with the current state of untrustworthy media in this country somebody has to step up and tell the news truthfully, no matter if it upsets someone.
Because as we all know the truth hurts, but there is nothing more powerful than a socially aware individual.
