It seems that everywhere you look nowadays, there's an Avenger, an X-Men team member, or an affiliate of the upcoming Justice League. I have bought fruit snacks with Batman and Superman on the box, crackers promoting the latest Captain America movie, as well as soft drinks adorned with the faces of various superheros.
It appears to me that the focus of these films are the heavy hitters, or the heroes that will sell. These are the teams/characters that the public is at least semi-familiar with. When the news broke that Spider-man would be receiving another reboot, I was not thrilled. Nor was I thrilled when I heard about "Batman vs. Superman." I was ecstatic when "Deadpool" was announced, and I had high hopes for "Suicide Squad" (which I have yet to watch).
I think that both DC and Marvel could benefit from some other stories. We know Uncle Ben's death was what catapulted Peter Parker's crime fighting career, we know that Bruce Wayne was orphaned at a young age. We know these stories, so I think it's time for some new ones. Here are some ideas that I think would interest the average audience.
1. Young Avengers
A film based on the original Young Avengers run would do wonders with Marvel's PR, as well as bring in a younger audience. The characters are so varied and wonderful, they all have backgrounds that a vast amount of people can relate too, and they all worked hard to become heroes. I fell in love with the sheer willpower of these kids, they wanted to do good and help people because they've all needed help at some point in their lives. I think it's very inspirational.
2. Hawkeye
I'm not going to beat around the bush: I love Hawkeye. I love his grit and determination, I love his inability to function as an adult, I love his heart, and I love his realness. A series based on the Fraction and Aja run would be absolutely amazing. It would shine the spotlight on an "average" hero, no magic, no super strength, no super suit, just a desire to never fail. Giving Hawkeye a backstory would also make up for his lack of involvement in the Avengers. It would also introduce, or further the story of, Kate Bishop, who is a gift.
3. Young Justice
Look, I love the series and I would kill for a third season, but I would also enjoy a live-action Young Justice. The introduction of a younger generation of hero, especially after the current events in the DCEU, Batman vs. Superman and the like, would be so simple it practically writes itself. "A bunch of super-powered teens struggle to control and master their powers in a world that struggles to accept the addition of meta-humans to the natural order." Get on it DC.
4. Red Hood and the Outlaws
Roy, aka Arsenal, literally set the shower on fire while Jason, aka the Red Hood, was in it. Is that not reason enough? True, this incident was in Red Hood/Arsenal, but it could always be incorporated into an Outlaws series. This has the potential to be the funniest, realest thing to ever come from the DCEU. It's literally just three a**holes trying to find balance in their lives. Plus it has Starfire, what's not to love? It's beautiful and I need it to be on Netflix ASAP.
5. Teen Titans
I just want to forget "Teen Titans Go!" ever happened, is that too much to ask? A live action version is literally my childhood dream. Teen Titans has already proven to be popular with all audiences, so the logical step is an introduction to the DCEU.
6. Static (Shock)
Virgil Hawkins is my small, fictional son. His story is generic--an average person obtains powers after exposure to superpower causing source. He struggles with being a teenager as well as a hero, which makes him a more relatable character. He can't just blow off school to save the day, and that leads to some complications. This struggle for balance would make for a great movie or series.
7. Literally any other Spider-person
I love Peter Parker, but I am so tired of watching his origin story over and over. Give me a Spider-woman movie, a Silk movie. Give me Spider-Gwen, Miles Morales, Ben Reilly. At this point I'd even settle for Spider-Ham, to be honest.
8. Literally any female hero
C'mon guys, it's 2016. Do I really need to say this? It should already be happening, just saying. Sure, Wonder Woman is great, and Captain Marvel is most likely going to be amazing, but it's just not enough. On the small screen, Supergirl is amazing, but it's not enough. Give us Squirrel Girl, She-Hulk, Barbara Gordon, X-23, Zatana, Starfire. Give us more women to look up to and admire, and please, please, don't oversexualize them.
There are plenty of teams and individual heroes that could benefit from their own films or series. Once the universe has been expanded, even more teams would be possible. More X-Men, the full Avengers line-up, X-Factor Investigations, the Runaways. Not to mention, the Justice League in all it's glory, Teen Titans scattered around the world, villains getting more development and action. The MCU and DCEU could really use some expansion, in my opinion.
