Dear Marching Band Director,
Your band just has a few things that we would like to let you know.
You are awesome.
Not just because of your fabulous personality, but for much more than that. Because you somehow manage to put our hot-mess selves on the football field and make us look great, all while dealing with the whole hot mess part of that deal. Because you deal with the same amount of rehearsal time as we do, PLUS the insane amount of time you must spend outside of that picking things out, planning, scheduling and all that jazz. I don't know how you do it. Because you listen to us complain and complain and complain, and you somehow always make us laugh, even after our fifth hour of outdoor rehearsal on an August afternoon. That, my friends, is talent.
And that is just the tip of the iceberg.
Sometimes we wish we could be you.
Yeah, being in charge of a marching band is lot of work, we're sure, but it has to be a little fun, right? Getting a nice tan (or sunburn) during band camp, yelling commands, getting to watch awesome shows done by awesome performers (that's us, by the way). And getting to pick out the music! Um, Fall Out Boy show, anyone?
We're sorry we're kind of cranky.
Okay, we'll admit, we get kind of snippy sometimes. It's the heat. And the lack of sleep. And the fact that we're STARVING. WHY DO WE HAVE REHEARSAL AT DINNER TIME?!
Sorry. Being hangry is a real thing.
You are our home away from home.
Being at college is hard, but you make it so much easier. You support us by encouraging us to do well in our other classes, making sure we are happy and always being there when we need someone to listen. Not to mention the amount of free food you have given us throughout the season (which is honestly the best present you can give to a broke college student who is sick of the cafeteria).
We hope we make you proud.
More than anything. Nothing is better than when we work and work on drill or a song and we know we nailed it because of the look on your face. We may complain (especially when you say, "One more time!" for the thousandth time in a row), but we love marching and playing. Why else would we be in marching band?
You are deserving of so much.
No one will ever understand the kind of things you sacrificed for us, to make us look great and for us to have an amazing band experience, and we are forever grateful for that. We wish we could buy you a boat or an island or something (or maybe a new drum set) but, again, there's that whole we're-broke-college-students thing.
Thank you for everything you've done.
We know that thank you isn't enough for all you've done. But we truly mean it, from the bottom of our band geek hearts.
Love,
Forever Your Marching Band
