A Letter To My Future Residents

I cannot wait to get to know you all.

A Letter To My Future Residents
Hanna Erdmann

Dear Future Residents,

Welcome to college! I am so excited to meet you all in these weeks to come. But as the time comes closer to your arrival, I thought I would write this letter to you before you get to meet me.

Right now, I am a stranger, but I really hope to be a mentor, a friend, a person to talk to if you need anything. College, though exciting, can be scary once you are really here. Believe me, I was in your shoes just one year ago. I still have a lot to learn myself. I want us to grow together.

I also wanted to write this to give some advice to you all from what I have seen to make your lives easier.

1. Don't look down on our hall meetings.

I know they are going to be tough to get through. I know you guys will be busy, but believe me, you will meet some people that at least for the first semester will become your family. Get to know each other.

2. Get a planner.

You will be so overwhelmed with events and classes and what to go to and what not to. Keep a planner to keep you in line. Everything will be ok after that. Stay organized.

3. Build your college family.

This will change and alter throughout the year. But find your family up at school. It will be a long year if you don’t have people backing you up.

4. Get involved!

I cannot stress this enough to you all. Our tiny campus has numerous activities to attend and clubs to join. Go to the activities fair and see what everything is about. You may even decide to go Greek;)

5. Please come talk to me.

Like I previously said, college can get scary sometimes. If you need anything (AND I MEAN ANYTHING) I will do what I can to be there. That is my job, after all.

Anyways, I think I covered some of the important topics in my letter to you. I don’t want to be like every RA in the book. I want to create a family for us. I want to be able to plan hall socials without hearing grunts and judgement. I want to be there for all of you. Just as you are probably nervous, know that I am just as nervous! I can’t wait for all of you to come see what our school has to offer, really a beautiful thing. I hope you all continue to have a wonderful summer and I will see you guys in August.

Sincerely,

Your Resident Assistant.

The best superpower ever? Being invisible of course. Imagine just being able to go from seen to unseen on a dime. Who wouldn't want to have the opportunity to be invisible? Superman and Batman have nothing on being invisible with their superhero abilities. Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
