Every morning, I wake up and complete my usual routine: check Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat. And every morning when I do this, I cry a little and regret not going abroad. I have never been out of the country (I know so weird, thanks Mom and Dad) and I was not that interested in going away for the first time for 4 months ... but I now realize that this decision was a huge mistake. My newsfeeds are filled with foreign food, beautiful cities and friends that I won’t see until August. This is a letter to my abroad friends to set a few things straight.
Dear Friends Abroad,
While I do really love you and miss you, I may have to delete you off every social media site until you return to America. It is not you, it is me. No I am kidding, it really is you. It is not because I hate you or have anything against you, it is all out of jealousy. You send me these gorgeous pictures of famous foreign landmarks while I am stuck in Tucson looking at cacti all day. You also make me hungry and sad every time you send me pictures of gelato or pizza.
Please don’t make other friends. The most important person in your life is me, stuck here in America. I tear up a little every time I see that you are out having fun with random strangers. That used to be us!! Come back please.
While we’re on the subject of you going out, your 4 a.m. snapchats of you out with random people really concern me. Also, I get it. You can drink there. You do not need to send me pictures of every shot you take and beer you drink. I am stuck here not even able to go to the bars yet, stop trying to make me feel even worse!
Most importantly, please still talk to me. I get you are having so much fun and all, but like, I am available whenever to FaceTime, text, Skype, Facebook, Viber, write letters, whatever works in the country you are in. Literally whenever, because I do not have a life without you here.
OKAY I MISS YOU
Sincerely,
Your friend still in America
