Dear Freshman Year Me

Things I wish I knew.

Dear Freshman Year me,

I write this letter telling you that you are a completely different person today because of the past four years. High School is one big emotional roller coaster but the ups and downs make it all worthwhile. Here are a few things you need to remember:

1. Take Risks.

High school is your time to experiment with different clubs, activities, people etc. Take full advantage of that, go out on the ledge and challenge yourself. Step out of your comfort zone and try something new, the worst thing that could happen is you don’t like it. Try as much as often as you can because these opportunities only come once in a lifetime, cease them while you can.

2. Failure is inevitable.

Yes, you are going to fail. You are going to forget to study and go into a test blind and bomb. There definitely will be some math formula you simply cannot grasp. Take a deep breath, take a step back. IT IS OKAY. Life is full of failure, and that’s the only way we can evolve and learn. That one test grade does not define you as a student.

3. You were beautiful before he told you.

In high school, everyone is changing and developing at different rates. I am telling you now, you will feel insecure and self-conscious. A guy will come around telling you that you are beautiful, boosting yourself of steam just to try and get in your pants. When he breaks your heart, remember that it is all a part of life. Every relationship either ends in marriage or a breakup.

4. You are more than enough.

Everyone goes through an awkward phase in high school, and let me tell you, yours is brutal. Stop comparing yourself to those girls walking down the halls. Stop being envious of the things they wear or the people they are with. Don’t waste your time trying to change to fit in with them. No one is perfect and you are perfect just the way you are, and you will find those people who love you for it.

5. It is okay to need someone.

Hormones go crazy throughout High School. Clicks form, rumors spread etc. Teens can be mean and High School is very tense. People will talk shit about you, and Boys will hurt you. You will lose friends and things at home will not always be easy. Do not hold in those tears, it is unhealthy. Tears are a form of healing and crying is just a simple way of showing you care.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
