Dear Freshman Self...

9

With graduation only a short month and a half away, I’ve been

reflecting a lot on my years here at Virginia Tech. What I would have done differently, what I would have done again and what I have learned. Here’s 30 things I would have told myself:

1.   It’s just a test. Whether you passed it or you failed it life moves on.

2.   He’s not going to matter a month from now.

3.   You’re going to be 21 eventually… enjoy the time when you’re allowed to go to parties and not be known as a creeper.

4.   Your friend group is going to change a million times before you graduate, so let the fights and drama slide because not everyone you meet is going to be your bridesmaid.

5.   You’re going to get twin littles. You’re going to lose a heck of a lot of sleep during big sis reveal week, but it will all be worth it. They’re the best friends you could ever ask for.

6.   Recruitment stinks on both sides. Have ice bags ready for your feet after wearing heels for extended periods of time.

7.   Blacksburg’s weather is unpredictable, so bring a sweatshirt, an umbrella and sandals to every class. You never know when it will go from burning hot to freezing cold.

8.   If he doesn’t text you first he’s not worth your time.

9.   Seriously sweetheart, stop texting him.

10. Parking Services are evil. Don’t leave your car unattended for even thirty seconds. They’re quick ticketing b@st@rds.

11. If you faint from blood, don’t pick a science major.

12. You’re going to join the perfect sorority that will change your life forever.

13. Don’t judge people by what organization they represent. There’s amazing people in every one.

14. Your 21st… Good luck.

15. Call your grandparents every day or at least once a week. They aren’t going to make it to your graduation.

16. The freshman fifteen is not a myth. You’ll work it off, so enjoy the French fries now.

17. If he doesn’t treat you like a princess, move the eff on! The longer you spend with the wrong guy, the longer you make the right one wait.

18. You’re going to be a bridesmaid… quite a few times in the next few years. The bride is ALWAYS right. Remember that.

19. Don’t get worked up over school. Some professors are actually here for the right reasons. The ones who aren’t, you’ll rarely see them again.

20. Believe in yourself.

21. Quit thinking you’re the failure child. Your brothers may be the smarter ones, but you’re definitely way funnier and have nicer hair.

22. Get “like” and “um” out of your vocabulary now.

23. Quit caring what other people think about you. You’re not meant to hear their thoughts for a reason.

24. You may have doubt why you went so far away from home, but to be honest, it was the best decision you ever made.

25. There’s going to be nights you look at the stars and realize how far away home is. Enjoy where you are right now, because home will always be there. It will wait for you.

26. Graduation does come, and you’re going to fear it.

27. These were the best years of your life, but graduating doesn’t mean life is ending. It’s a new chapter.

28. Sing karaoke on stage at TOTS, no matter how many people “boo” you. And they will “boo” you… you were never that great of a singer anyways.

29. These are the years everyone looks forward to and the years everyone looks back on. Quit letting everything get to you and just smile.

30. You’re going to miss this place more than you could ever imagine. So enjoy every Hokie second of it

P.S. You'll get Hokie stone senior year and you might cry.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
