Wow, what a long, interesting road it has been. Who would have thought that the day would come where we are choosing between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. I definitely didn’t, but what can you do?
The last two elections you kids have any solid recollection of most likely goes back to circa 2008, when you were in the 5th or 6th grade and President Obama made history. Four years later, the first time you experienced an election that you were finally able to understand the electoral process was in 2012 when Obama won his second round in the Oval Office.
So, here you finally are - ages 18-21. You finally have had the opportunity to develop your own thoughts and ideals, view the crazy world of politics to through your own lens, and have the opportunity to make your own decisions.
And your choices? Well…
If you happen to have confidence and reassurance in either Trump or Clinton and you have no doubt with the candidate you are going to cast the ballot for in a little over a month - congratulations! Because that feeling is not exactly a luxury that most first time voters share.
Maybe you know what you have to do, what candidate you have to vote for, and what decision you have to make in order to choose between the ‘lesser of the two evils.’
And maybe you have a slightly guilty conscience about it.
Maybe you are feeling mad, frustrated, and disappointed in our overall political system for leaving you with two unfit choices for office.
Maybe you feel torn between voting with your conscience or voting for the party you believe you identify with.
Maybe your parents are telling you “not voting for ____ is a vote for ____.”
Maybe you want to vote for a third party candidate, but you feel as if you would be simply throwing your vote away.
Maybe its time for you to say 'screw this,' and start hoping for the best in 2020.
Or maybe not.
Whatever you do, vote. Because as it is your first election, you will always remember it. And this one will certainly go down in history.
Good luck and may the odds be ever in America’s favor.
