Let's take a moment to look back on the old Facebook, the Facebook my generation would look back and laugh at, nostalgically.
Dear Facebook,
I would like to reminisce on those years and days that I would come home from school every day and log into Facebook, checking any notifications, likes, pokes, or messages. Facebook was my generation's best thing ever invented at the time. I remember those people who would get 65 likes on a post and I would be so jealous. I would never take a selfie at first, but you had those girls who would take a selfie a day with their hands in a heart form or throwing up a peace sign.
I remember I would sit in my basement with my friends, and the only fun thing we could think of was posting our status of “Truth is ...” I remember when I would write truth is on my crush's wall saying “truth is … IDK you, but you're cute” or something corny like that. Then there was the date, rate, hate when for the hate part on my friend's wall I would joke around, “hate: you’re not cool.” I remember posting photos that uploaded and putting them into albums “Freshie ;), Sophw*ores, Juniors for lyfe.”
I remember when guys would Facebook message you and use the typical line, “I hate fb messaging, text me.” These events that occurred caused the relationships, friendships, drama, breakups, etc. throughout the end of my middle school, and throughout my high school years. Facebook created those status dramas that led to subtweets on Twitter. The innapropriate profile pictures are now left for Instagram to deal with. The girly posts and wise words for relationships are printed on Tumblr. Facebook connected my friends and me and connected me with so many things as a young teenager.
Now, Facebook has changed, as has my generation and society. I use Instagram to post those self-pictures and express what I did on the weekend. I now use Twitter to retweet and tag my friends in hilarious tweets. I don't use Tumblr, but for those who do express their way on there. I use Facebook, to express my writing, to connect with old family members and teachers. To remember who has a birthday on that day because sometimes we all forget. I message old family members to stay in contact. I still am in some contact with my Kindergarten teacher. My family posts photos of what they are doing home while I am away. Facebook is my way to reconnect with the world not around me. I look back and laugh at the moments and things my friends and I did on this website, but Facebook was a part of me growing up with social media.
Facebook has been used for contacting family, friends, old teachers. The kids who are now in their 20s used Facebook for date, rate, hate, truth is, bored-text, post profile pics, get messaged by boys, and stalk people on their profiles. So Facebook, thank you for holding our past memories, words, photos, videos, fights, and laughs. Thank you for having all my family involved and connecting people with one another. Facebook may be so irrelevant and unimportant, but it will never be forgotten, which is funny and pretty cool.
Thanks, Facebook, I will be stalking you later.
