Dear College Freshmen: Don't Even Think About It

We've all read those cute articles about how to have an amazing first year of college. But what about the things you shouldn't do? You know, the things to avoid so that you won't publicly humiliate yourself? As a senior, I wish I had been given more tips about how to have a successful college experience besides common advice like "take the easiest professors" or the even less helpful "don't drink the punch," So, from a senior who actually does want to help freshmen, here are 15 tips on how to help you have a memorable (hopefully in a positive sense) and smooth freshman year of college.

1. Don't rush into a relationship.

The number of times I've seen people jump into a new relationship too early is far too high. There's plenty of time to connect and get to know someone who is right for you throughout your college career.

2. Don't take the easiest professor.

No, I'm not sending you on a suicide mission. If the class is in your major or even interests you a little, then take the professor that you will learn the most from, not the one who will give you the easy A.

3. Don't make every picture you take a selfie.

Ten years from now, it'll be way less embarrassing to look back at the pictures of the events you attended and not the poor makeup and hair choices you made.

4. Don't act like you are royalty at your college.

You are no longer a senior who runs your high school. If you pretend like you are superior to anyone, then you will lose their respect automatically.

5. Don't wear ridiculous things to class.

I shouldn't have to even say this, but I've seen it happen every year. Pajamas, lanyards, capes, costumes, etc. need to be saved for other places besides your campus.

6. Don't be afraid to try something new.

Whether it be a club, Greek life, a team, or something that you've never even though of before, don't be afraid to try it out. The worst that will happen is you're not any good at it and you move on to the next experience.

7. Don't skip events.

While choosing to sleep or simply being too lazy to go to school events may sound tempting, you only have a few chances to experience being a college student, so make the most of it.

8. Don't only eat pizza and ice cream.

This one is pretty self explanatory. The freshman 15 is real.

9. Don't forget to get some exercise.

Refer to #8. Plus, it reduces stress.

10. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

There is always something who will be there to help you, from councilors to friends. Don't let the fear of judgement keep you from getting the help you need.

11. Don't let your GPA define you.

While grades are important, don't be too hard on yourself because of a tough semester.

12. Don't take college for granted.

Being able to attend college is a privilege that many people aren't able to have. Be humble and work hard to achieve your degree.

13. Don't neglect others when you're busy.

College is a busy and stressful time for everyone. Make sure to check up on your friends and be there for support when they are down.

14. Don't give in to peer pressure.

Peer pressure still exists even in college. If you aren't comfortable with something, then walk away and don't do anything you'll later regret.

15. Don't forget to soak in every moment of college.

College flies by, and before you know it you're a senior wishing you had read tips to help you have an even better college experience. Take a moment everyday to appreciate the small moments that will turn into your favorite memories.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
